MacLean returns from an ‘incredible adventure’ in space shuttle Atlantis

After 12 days, York alumnus Steve MacLean’s much-delayed flight into – and back from – space ended happily Sept. 21 as the space shuttle Atlantis touched down at 6:21am at Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida. "This has been an incredible adventure!" affirmed MacLean, shortly after landing. "Our crew successfully resumed the assembly of the International Space Station and I am proud to have represented Canada in this endeavour. Canadian technology played a key role during this mission, and this flight showcased once again the valuable expertise of Canadians. Shortly before his return, MacLean sent a second message from space to the York community via President & Vice-Chancellor Lorna R. Marsden, thanking York for his “wonderful” experience at the University.


Mobile learning: lectures to go
Students at York University can now study on the go with the aid of video lectures delivered via the Apple iPod. "What we’re offering students is the ability to customize their learning environment to fit their lifestyle and their learning style," says Diane Zorn, a lecturer in the School of Arts & Letters in York’s Atkinson Faculty of Liberal & Professional Studies.

The Career Centre presents – Career Expo 2006!
Want a job? You’re in the driver’s seat! The Career Centre is hosting the first annual Career Expo 2006 on Thursday, Sept. 28, from 10am to 4:15pm in the Student Centre. The event features high-profile speakers and employers who want to hire York grads.

York graduate students win $5.59 million in awards
Students in York’s Faculty of Graduate Studies have won $5.59 million in research scholarship and fellowship grants from the Social Sciences & Humanities Research Council of Canada. A total of 144 York students received fellowships and grants for projects which range from the history of the Toronto subway system to justice in post-genocide Rwanda and the reinterpretation of ideology through suicide bombings.

Canadian Writers in Person series returns
York University students and the public can get up close and personal with an eclectic group of authors this year. Twelve Canadian authors, including Trillium Book Award winner Wayson Choy and Giller-nominated Camilla Gibb, will read from their latest works during York’s Canadian Writers in Person Series, which launched Sept. 21 and runs through March 2007.

Mentorship program is catching on at Atkinson
Atkinson's Student-Alumni Mentorship Program is founded in the belief that people genuinely want to help others. For the past four years, the program has provided alumni with an opportunity to step into the lives of Atkinson students, offering career insight, friendship and a helping hand.

York community's eighth run for Terry raises $10,000
York University celebrated the memory and spirit of cancer-crusader Terry Fox at York’s eighth annual Terry Fox Run, Sept. 17. More than 150 members of the York community came together to celebrate the 26th anniversary of Fox's cross-country Marathon of Hope and raise $10,000.

Schulich's ranking rises in WSJ survey
The Schulich School of Business at York University was ranked among the world's top 15 international business schools for the third straight year in the Wall Street Journal's annual global survey of corporate recruiters. Schulich ranked 13th in the world – its highest ever ranking in the newspaper's survey.

A mother's story of loss and courage
Renowned Argentinian human rights leader Nora Cortiñas delivered the 2006 Michael Baptista Lecture at York on Sept. 22. A founding member of the Madres de Plaza de Mayo-Linea Fundadora (Mothers of May Square), Cortiñas is a social psychologist and chair in the Economics Department at the University of Buenos Aires, where she teaches about the relationship between economic power and human rights.
