Living as a Chameleon – understanding girls' anger
Girls are taught from a young age to suppress their anger. Anger is unfeminine and could lead to rejection by friends and family, they’re warned. So they swallow it, silencing their authentic selves. Many get depressed, especially during the turbulent, identity-seeking adolescent years, and end up on medication, notes nursing Prof. Cheryl van Daalen-Smith. Now she's published a handbook, Living as a Chameleon, A Guide to Understanding Girls’ Anger for Girl-Serving Professionals.

Four smokers receive $305-tickets for not butting out
Smoking just became an even more expensive habit for four members of the York community after a visit by a provincial offences officer from Toronto Public Health. The four – three students and a York staff member – were hit with fines of $305 each for smoking in prohibited areas on the Keele campus.

Student Services building renamed to honour former chancellor
The Student Services Centre on York's Keele campus has been officially renamed The Bennett Centre for Student Services, in honour of Avie Bennett, former chancellor of the University. "There is no better way for us to recognize the many contributions that Avie Bennett has made to York than to forever connect his name with his greatest passion at the University – its students," said York President & Vice-Chancellor Lorna R. Marsden.

Fine arts calendar is full of creative flair
York film students and alumni are making a strong showing at Film Is Dead! Long Live Film!, a special event celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto. It's just one of many events featuring artists from York's Faculty of Fine Arts this fall.

Disseminating information in the Internet age
York's Engin Isen wants to know: Are we experiencing an over-accumulation crisis in academic publishing? Is this proliferation related to the emergence of new forms of writing and publishing on the Internet such as blogs, Wikipedia, and forums? Find out on Nov. 30.

Student ensembles celebrate term's end
The York University Symphony Orchestra, directed by music Professor Mark Chambers, steps into the spotlight Nov. 30 at 7:30pm with a landmark performance: the world premiere of Ghazal, a new work by David Lidov, professor of music at York. Four more concerts showcasing the most popular instrument in the history of music: the human voice.

Cleaning up for the United Way
Three weeks into the United Way Campaign, York University has reached the $70,000 mark in donations, almost halfway to its goal of raising $190,000. The past few weeks have been very busy for those working on the campaign, with events such as the Facilities Services Car Wash and the inaugural York University Clothing Swap for the United Way.

What can a student do with a degree in sociology? The answer is simple: lots! On Nov. 2 the Sociology Undergraduate Student Association (SUSA) presented the options to undergraduates at the first annual Career Day.

Marsden recognized as one of
Canada's most powerful women

Lorna R. Marsden, York president & vice-chancellor, has once again been honoured as one of Canada's Most Powerful Women: Top 100, and selected as the top public sector leader. The award was presented Nov. 21 by the Women's Executive Network in Toronto.

Roundtable to examine transit as a catalyst for York's Keele campus
York University Development Corporation is hosting a roundtable discussion titled, "Transit as Catalyst", Tuesday, Nov. 28, from 4 to 6pm, Room 280, York Lanes. The roundtable discussion will examine the impact of the long-anticipated extension of the Spadina subway to York University.

Speaker series explores animal cognition
While humans are visually focused, some animals experience the world through their sense of smell. Given that the universe of each animal group is so different, the challenge is to find relevant ways to study how their minds work. A newly created Cognition in Context Seminar and Speaker Series looks into it.

Beijing students enjoy York's 'Chinese' professor
Professor Jay Goulding is considered by some Chinese scholars as "more Chinese than the Chinese." A recent visiting lecturer at two leading universities in Beijing, Goulding enjoyed the unique position of explaining ancient Chinese philosophy to Chinese students.

Alumna fled Hungary as a 12-year-old
The month of November and the clothes worn by a young girl 50 years ago hold special significance for York University staff member and alumna Marika Kemeny. It was in November 1956, that as a frightened 12-year-old Kemeny and her family fled Hungary, on what would be an odyssey lasting over eight months.

Men's volleyball Lions host top-ranked Ryerson this weekend
The York Lions men's volleyball team continues its seven-game home stand this weekend when the squad plays host to the No.6-ranked and undefeated Ryerson Rams at 2pm Saturday afternoon at the Tait McKenzie Centre.

Faces of Faith 2006 showcases York's 32 religious clubs
The Centre for Student Community & Leadership Development at York, in conjunction with the University's Interfaith Council, invites members of the York community to come out and meet the "Faces of Faith" during Interfaith Council Day on Wednesday, Nov 29, from 10am to 2pm, in the East Bear Pit in Central Square on York’s Keele campus.
