Sport York
celebrates its
athlete achievers

Sport York held its 39th Annual Awards Banquet on Thursday night at the Montecassino Place Banquet Hall in Toronto. More than 400 student-athletes from 23 teams celebrated the 2006-2007 season at York with their coaches and staff. The Female Athlete of the Year was fourth-year basketball forward Kim Gibbs. The Male Athlete of the Year was Dan Eves who finished his university basketball career as a second team all-Canadian and a first team Ontario all-star.


Grad's debut novel attracts Brit and US publishers
York alumna Sidura Ludwig’s debut novel, Holding My Breath, has just been published by Key Porter Books and has already had glowing reviews. The book was released in Canada in March and has been scooped up by two publishers for release next year.

Five new inductees to enter the Sport Hall of Fame
York’s School of Kinesiology & Health Science has announced the 2007 inductees for the York University Sport Hall of Fame. Four former interuniversity athletes and one builder will be inducted during the dinner and ceremony on Thursday, May 31.

York students get Millennium scholarships
For Monica Radovski and Naveen Hassan, keeping busy, involved and active within their communities is of the essence. Both have recently been awarded an Excellence Award from the Canada Millennium Scholarship Foundation. Students can also attend information sessions at York and learn how to apply for the 2007 awards.

Gallery presents triple bill
of one-time-only art performances

It’s a one-of-a-kind show that will be performed only once – on April 4. Three Toronto visual artists have been working all year with 12 dance, music and theatre students at York to fashion three innovative new works to be performed just once.

Classical vocalists shine at NATS competition
York music students Vania Chan and Vanessa Lanch, both sopranos, took second and third place respectively in the fourth-year women's category of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) district auditions held in Muncie, Ind., in early March.

Future global leaders meet at York Thursday
York University hosts the Greater Toronto Area Junior Team Canada (JTC) Global Leaders Centre on Thursday. The event, one of 18 at universities across Canada, brings together government officials and leaders from small and mid-sized businesses and community organizations to teach 150 high-school and university students the ins and outs of global and economic leadership.

Book on social justice movement strikes a chord
After the 9-11 terrorist attacks on the United States, social justice groups suffered a serious setback, so York Professor David McNally, thought his book, which he calls his "contribution to the social justice movement," would be short-lived. Instead, it went on to become a bestseller.

Four individuals with ties to York University have figured prominently in this year’s Writers’ Trust Awards. Each was the recipient of a portion of $123,000 in prizes, making the event one of the richest awards nights in Canada.

Women's Studies celebrates new home
The School of Women's Studies now calls Founders College home. Previously located on the seventh floor of the Ross Building, then housed temporarily in Winters College, the school now occupies 206 Founders College. The move was cause for celebration. 

Schulich finance professor wins international award
Investing expert Moshe Milevsky will receive a Graham and Dodd Scroll Award of Excellence for 2006 for a groundbreaking research paper that he co-authored with three colleagues. The paper describes a practical methodology for merging three financial planning decisions that have traditionally been kept distinct.

Online journal unites poets and educators
Poets and professors, including York's Rishma Dunlop, gathered at Green College, University of British Columbia, to celebrate the launch of Studio, a new online poetry journal that offers an unprecedented focus on the interdisciplinary relationships between poetry, education, cultural studies, and other art forms.

An innovative approach to critical theory
The 21st century has experienced a less than perfect start: Environmental catastrophe, wars and social ills have left many feeling overwhelmed. In his new book, York Professor Nikolas Kompridis presents a new blueprint that encourages critical theorists to think beyond the limitations he sees in the approach of the leading contemporary theorist.

After 10 seasons and three Ontario University Athletics East Coach of the Year awards, York’s women’s volleyball head coach Hernan Humana is retiring from university coaching – but will still be teaching in the School of Kinesilogy & Health Science, Faculty of Health.

Education zine offering $100 prize for title
York International has announced a contest open to all members of the York community to come up with a name for a new magazine on post-secondary international education in Canada. The free online magazine, which will be subtitled “The Canadian Magazine of International Education”, will be published three times a year.

Social policy journal notes growing engagement of youth
The latest issues of the Canadian Review of Social Policy (CRSP) have just hit the stands. Edited by York professors and published by York’s School of Social Work, one issue of the scholarly journal notes that a growing interest in the political engagement of young people is emerging.
