| CAMPUS NOTES False fire alarms and bomb threats are no joking matter With the onset of the exam period, the threat of disruptions caused by false fire alarms and bomb threats increases. Anyone who knowingly communicates a false report of a bomb threat in order to alarm members of the community or who commits a malicious activation of a fire alarm can be held criminally accountable, says Dragan Spasojevic, manager of security operations. These offences are also a breach of the Student Code of Conduct, which specifically mentions these disruptive acts. Those responsible could be held liable for costs incurred by the University. Students should be aware that York does allow, under specific conditions, for deferred standing of final exams and assignments. More information on deferred standing is available on the University Registrar Web site’s FAQ page. If anyone has information regarding a disruption during an exam, they can report it confidentially to York Security Services at ext. 33333. Osgoode faculty accept new agreement Construction update: the Archives of Ontario project Following hoarding, the site will be stripped of topsoil and levelled. Once this is completed, work will begin on drilling the foundation caissons. The drilling is expected to start some time during the week of April 23. The Vanier Parking Lot will be taken out of service and will not be available to the York University community after Friday, April 13. The lot will be used by the contractor as a trailer compound and construction staging area for the duration of the project which is expected to continue until March 2009. The lot will be fenced-in to maintain safe and secure conditions for community members and the contractor. There should be minimal disruption to the community during this initial construction stage. The contractor has been directed to maintain reasonable hours of operation at the site and will not start daily activities before 7am. In order to maintain schedules, certain aspects of site preparation (hoarding and fence installation) may occur during the weekend. Heavier construction will start after exams wind up at the end of April. Once construction peaks, pedestrian and traffic flows around the project site will be affected. The contractor working on the project will take all necessary precautions to ensure the safety of members of the York community. Precautionary measures include posting warning signs, use of flag persons to direct pedestrians and traffic, and scheduling certain activities at off-peak times. The York University Development Corporation is managing this construction project on behalf of the University. Feedback and questions should be forwarded by e-mail to yudc@yorku.ca. Construction continues on a new colonnade for Accolade The first sections of perimeter hoarding will be installed along the north side of the Accolade East and Accolade West Buildings. The initial scope of the work prior to the major construction will include the removal of a portion of the existing interlocking pavers in the walkway on the south side of the common from the east side of Vari Hall to the northeast corner of Accolade East. There should be minimal disruption to the York community during this stage. Heavy construction is scheduled to begin after the completion of classes later in April. The contractor performing the work will take all necessary precautions to ensure the safety of the community including the posting of signs and the directing of traffic when needed. Questions or feedback should be directed by e-mail to facilities@yorku.ca. Changes to GO bus services to universities and colleges
In most cases, GO will revert to a back to basics schedule without many of the extra buses that were required to handle the extra passengers during the school year. New schedule times for Fall 2007 will be posted in late August. For more information, visit the GO Transit Web site or call 1-800-GETONGO (438-6646).
