Yorkfest, the University’s largest single-day student event, will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 18, at the Keele campus. As always, the event features a variety of musical acts throughout the day, from pop to rock and more, and a festival village featuring hundreds of exhibits by student clubs and sponsors. This year’s featured acts are Bedouin Soundclash, Zaki Ibrahim, Empire ISIS, Sandie Black and Symphony of Nine, winner of this year’s Garageworks competition at The Underground in March.


Widely accepted YU-card offers
more benefits to students

The beginning of the new academic year will be significant in more ways than one for York University students. Starting this fall, York's snazzy red and white identification card, known as the YU-card ("you-card"), will be the only student ID card at York. The new YU-cards are being issued to all new students.

National U-22 women’s team plays exhibition hockey series at York
The Canadian national under-22 women’s hockey team hits the ice at York for six exhibition games this week. As part of the team’s selection camp, there will be two intrasquad games and four games against a CIS all-star team at Canlan Ice Sports on York’s Keele campus.

Degrassi transforms Keele campus into a television stage
Now in production on its seventh season, the hit Canadian television series "Degrassi: The Next Generation" made its way to York's Keele campus. The cast and crew were on campus Aug. 1 filming a two-part "Spring Break" episode, which will air in January 2008.

York doctoral student is a rising star in infancy research
One of the major concerns of most PhD students is finding funding. This is especially true for visa students, such as York doctoral student Gabriela Markova, who are not eligible for many Canadian research fellowships. But this year, she can sweep aside any financial worries. Markova is one of seven recipients of the 2007-2008 Susan Mann Dissertation Scholarship valued at $17,000.

Modesty may not pay off at work, York researcher says
Women who believe in modestly under-representing their accomplishments at work appear to earn less than those who think it is appropriate to speak up, York Professor Marie-Hélène Budworth told the annual meeting of the Academy of Management this week.

Catch a rising star with York's Canadian Writers in Person series
Many of the rising stars of Canlit will present readings of their works at this year's Canadian Writers in Person series. Twelve Canadian authors, including York alumnus and Griffin Poetry Prize winner Christian Bök, will read from their works during the popular series, which launches Sept. 20 and runs through March 27.

The importance of literary translation
Literary translation plays an important role in enhancing intercultural understanding, says Glendon translation Professor Agnès Whitfield. "Not all Canadians feel comfortable enough in their second language to read a work of literature in its original language," says Whitfield, a professor in York's Glendon School of Translation.

Got the rhythm but need the keyboard?
Whether you’re a professional musician or simply enjoy “tickling the ivories” from time to time – if you’re in the market for a piano, you may find one at York this month. Every summer, the Music Department's stock of pianos is turned over and made available to the public for purchase thanks to Merriam Music and premium instrument supplier Kawai.

African visitor taps into York's alumni expertise
Linda Mkhize hurried across a deserted Keele campus, briefcase in tow, for an 11am appointment. She was determined to be on time, after journeying all the way from Cape Town, South Africa, to talk to James Allan, director of York's Alumni Office, to learn as much as she could about alumni databases and Web sites.

York to the Power of 50: Donated painting finds a new home
When Professor Frank Marchese of the Department of Psychology in York's Faculty of Health bought a beautiful, abstract painting by Moscow-born Montreal artist Leopold Plotek, he tried in vain to find a place for it in his home. Marchese then realized that the perfect home for the striking work was at York.

Fisher gears up for national championships
York Lions tennis star Joelle Fisher will represent Ontario at the inaugural University & College National Tennis Championships this week (Aug. 16 to 18) at the Rexall Centre. Fisher qualified for the nationals by winning her second OUA individual tournament in a row this past season.
