Let the Frosh Welcome Week fun begin

It’s that time of year again – the last week of summer vacation, when the Keele and Glendon campuses begin teeming with new students – a.k.a. frosh – looking to orient themselves at York before the official start of the Fall term. It’s Frosh Welcome Week and the fun is about to begin. After several meetings throughout the summer by the members of the York Orientation Directors Association – YODA, for short – the college student councils are ready to welcome first-year students and get them off on the right foot, with dozens of events filling the calendar until York Day on Sept. 4.


Lions hire former Argo all-star as defensive coordinator
The York Lions football team has announced the hiring of three-time Canadian Football League all-star Clifford Ivory as defensive coordinator after a seven-year CFL playing career that included a Grey Cup with the Argos in 2004.

York's Fisher places eighth at university tennis championships
York University tennis all-star Joelle Fisher ran into some tough competition and finished eighth at the inaugural University and College National Championships held Aug. 16-18 at the Rexall Centre.

Gentles looks at Ireland as a laboratory for empire
Glendon history Professor Ian Gentles has received an award from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada to research his latest book on 17th-century Ireland and its English conquerers.

York poet lauded by international journal
Humanities and English Professor Patricia Keeney is the subject of a recently published major essay on her work in one of France’s top literary journals, Poésie Première. This issue of the journal, dedicated to women in poetry, features an international lineup from destinations as diverse as Italy, Tunisia, Greece and Canada.

Konichiwa! Japan scholars visit York for international conference
Japan scholars from around the world converged on York University’s Keele campus to participate in a four-day conference, which ran from Aug. 16 to 19. The meeting, hosted by the Japan Studies Association of Canada, had a unique York influence as it was chaired by York Japanese studies Professor Norio Ota.
