Call Centre makes an impact
in students' lives
“Why not $10,000 this year?” said an alumna recently to a student caller working at York’s Call Centre. She was making a donation to York, the largest single gift ever received through the Call Centre. Every year, thousands of students receive much needed financial assistance thanks to the generosity of York supporters. “The most important thing for the Call Centre is not simply to get a donation; it’s to connect with the person, to get them involved in what’s happening on campus," says student caller Damian Brown, a second-year political science student. "It’s important to create a relationship with alumni.” 
Two suspects in Vanier assaults appear in court
Two men facing 11 charges each in connection with sexual assaults in York’s Vanier Residence on Sept. 7 appeared in court Sept. 24. The Toronto Police Service received information Sept. 21 that led investigators to identify and arrest the second man wanted in connection with the assaults. 
Justin Trudeau speaks to students at York this week
Justin Trudeau wil speak at York on Thursday about becoming an active and engaged citizen. The education, environmental and youth advocate is the most illustrious of four keynote speakers invited to address students at Career Conversations ’07 this week. 
YFS hosts York West election debate plus panel with Ed Broadbent
The York Federation of Students will host an all-candidates debate for the riding of York West. The debate will take place Tuesday, from 1-3 pm, on York’s Keele Campus featuring Antoni Shelton (NDP), Mario Sergio (Liberal) and Shane O’Toole (PC). Thursday, there will be a panel discussion on electoral reform featuring Ed Broadbent, Hugh Seagal and Kate Holloway. 

New ad campaign set to make a splash in Toronto and beyond
Most advertising campaigns have a hook. In the case of York’s 2007 reputational advertising campaign, that hook has landed a large fish, and it's catching plenty of attention. TTC passengers in Toronto were presented with a streetcar masquerading as a fish, on the King Street line. 
Schulich earns a stellar global ranking from the Wall Street Journal
The Wall Street Journal ranked the Schulich School of Business at York University number one in Canada and among the world's top 15 international business schools in its annual global survey of corporate recruiters. In the survey released Sept. 17, Schulich was ranked 11th in the world, its highest ever ranking in the Journal’s "Top International Schools" survey. 
Lions and Blues gear up for Red & Blue Bowl
The Homecoming Red & Blue Bowl is always a much-anticipated game for the York Lions, but this year’s edition of the Toronto gridiron classic has special significance for both York and U of T. In soccer, York's men's and women's teams continue to thrive in rankings with after a banner week of play. 
Bidding begins on 'The Simpsons' LA experience
Bidding on a special event, entitled “Join Joel Cohen, writer of 'The Simpsons', in Los Angeles for an exclusive table read”, begins Sept. 26 on eBay and continues until Oct. 3. Cohen, writer and co-executive producer of “The Simpsons”, is a York graduate. 
Bike to York offers tune-up event and Critical Mass training ride
Bike to York is hosting two events on Friday, Sept. 28. The first is a free bike tune-up clinic and the second is a training ride downtown to the Critical Mass parade and protest. 
Remembering Glenn Gould
Celebrations are under way all across the country this week to commemorate one of Canada’s most revered cultural icons: pianist, broadcaster, composer, writer, conductor and recording artist Glenn Gould. Among the eminent Canadian artists showcased in this series is York music Professor Christina Petrowska Quilico. 
Writers with York connections flavour the Giller Prize long list
Work by three authors with connections to York University have been included in the long list of 15 nominees for the Scotiabank Giller Prize. They include newcomer and York alumnus David Chariandy plus former Giller prize winners Michael Ondaatje, a Glendon English professor, and M.G. Vassanji, a York honorary degree recipient. 
Vote on the ‘50 Cent’ ethical question
A debate on the ethics of promoting hip hop artist 50 Cent, who toured in Toronto in 2005 during a spate of gun crimes, will be held Friday in the Seymour Schulich Building and will include an audience vote on the issue. Find out how you can reserve tickets for this event. 
Panel to examine universities and responsible investment
The University Colloquium on the Global South will host a panel presentation, titled "Universities and Responsible Investments" on Wednesday. The panel will address how multinational and transnational corporations are acting in the Global South and what role universities can play in fostering change. 
Mentalist and magician James Biss performs at York
Canadian magician and mentalist James Biss will present a special benefit performance, one night only, at York University. The performance, a fundraiser for the York branch of the international non-profit student organization AIESEC, will take place Thursday, Sept. 27. 
World Community Grid benefits from York volunteers
York University has donated more than 25 years of computer research time to World Community Grid through a campaign that officially launched in March of this year. At that time, York University became the first Canadian university to partner with World Community Grid to provide computer processing power from idle computers for global humanitarian research projects. 
National advisory body honors York's Faculty of Health dean
Harvey Skinner, dean of York's Faculty of Health, has been inducted as a fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences, the national advisory body that counsels government on health issues and public policy. Skinner was inducted Sept. 18 in Montreal becoming one of fewer than 200 fellows in the organization. 
York alumna Heather Mains killed in a kayaking accident
Academic and advocate Heather Lee Mains has died. Mains (BFA ’81, MA ’03), the founder of the social marketing company Duegood and for several years an active member of the York-based Association for Reseach on Mothering, was killed in a kayaking accident on the Tay River in Perth, Ont., on Sept. 1, at age 50. 
Anna Maria de Souza: Brazilian Ball founder and friend to York
Philanthropist and dedicated volunteer Anna Maria de Souza, the founder and remarkable driving force behind the Brazilian Carnival Ball, died Sept. 18 after a nine-month battle with cancer. De Souza was a great friend of York University and York was chosen twice within the past nine years as the beneficiary of the glamorous red carpet event.
