York Senate approves new Faculty name
The search for a dean to head the newest Faculty at York can officially begin, after York Senate decided what to call the entity that will replace the Faculty of Arts and the Atkinson Faculty of Liberal & Professional Studies on July 1, 2009. Although it sounds simple enough, the issue of naming the new Faculty is just one example of the thousands of details that must be addressed before the new Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies, or LA&PS, becomes a reality. 
Convocation goes green
York's latest sustainability initiative comes from an unexpected area – convocation and ceremonials. From getting rid of printed invitations to how ceremonial regalia and robes are dry-cleaned, York has been looking for ways to go green for its convocations. 
The Red Zone opens for another season
York's RED Zone is back for its third season. The new student transition program opened its doors once again to incoming students on May 5. Last year, the RED Zone helped more than 7,500 new students take the plunge into their first year of university life at York. 
Award will honour student who died after graduation
For the mother of York alumna Taryn Stephens, who died last year of meningitis, giving back to the community is a way of keeping her daughter's memory alive. The family is raising money for a York award in her name at the Mississauga Marathon.

Talented members of York's Faculty of Fine Arts have been busy this spring with a full slate of performances and exhibitions, film debuts, speaking events and concerts. Check out what's playing around town this month at venues in town. 
Four former OHLers set to join Lions men's hockey squad
The York Lions men’s hockey team have added four players with major junior experience to their roster. The Lions have announced that forward Scott Restoule, defencemen Matt Thomson and Riley Brand, and goalie David Davenport will play in 2008-2009. 
Lions hoops squad to play 3 NCAA teams
The York Lions men’s basketball team has announced that it will play three exhibition games against NCAA Division I teams over the Labour Day weekend. The Lions will play host to North Carolina State University, University of North Carolina-Charlotteand Pennsylvania State University in games at the Tait McKenzie Centre. 
York student takes grand prize in Japanese-language contest
York Faculty of Arts student Hyun Ji Kim has won the grand prize, which included a trip to Japan, as well as first place in the intermediate category at the 19th Canadian National Japanese Language Speech Contest. This is the fifth consecutive year a York student has won the grand prize. 
FES student wins funding for research in the Seychelles
With help from clothing retailer Cotton Ginny, York PhD student Michele Paule Martin is researching environmental education in the Seychelles islands. Her research on the 115-island archipelago off the east coast of Africa is part of Martin’s larger doctoral investigation into improving environmental education practices in schools worldwide. 
Recreation York offers free Demo Week
Recreation York is offering an opportunity for you to try out a host of activities at the Tait McKenzie Centre – the site of York's free Demo Week, May 5 to 9. A wide range of classes will be offered at no cost during the special week. Whether it's dance, tennis, swimming or yoga, it's all free for one week. 
Life after CineSiege: Big-screen success for York films
Year after year, York films make the cut, garnering accolades on the festival circuit. CineSiege, the Department of Film’s annual juried showcase screening of outstanding student productions, serves as a launching pad for works that go on to festivals and awards. 
Schulich student wins international essay competition
A first-year Schulich iBBA student was recently selected as one of the worldwide winners of an international essay competition that challenged students to come up with an entrepreneurial solution to a global issue. Emil Noordeh is one of only 200 students from 50 countries around the world to be selected as a winner of the St. Gallen "Wings of Excellence" Award. 
York experiment launched aboard microsatellite
York researchers will begin measuring pollution in Earth's atmopshere with instrumentation aboard a Canadian microsatellite, launched on an Indian spacecraft. York University's Argus microspectrometer is riding aboard the CanX-2 microsatellite, launched from India. 
Faculty of Education forges new partnerships with China
Paul Axelrod, dean of the Faculty of Education at York, is continuing to forge new partnerships and initiatives between York University and China. His recent trip to the cities of Shanghai, Nanjing and Suzhou in China has faculty gearing up to deliver programming to visiting educators at the new SuOn Centre. 
Interpretation lectures brings in the crowds at Glendon
A community interpretation lecture and workshop along with a parliamentary interpretation lecture drew students, professionals and members of Toronto's multi-ethnic community to York’s Glendon campus. The interest demonstrated the need for training in interpretation. 
Schizophrenia and superior verbal intelligence can co-exist
A study released yesterday by York researchers has found that schizophrenia patients with superior verbal abilities are like similarly-gifted healthy people in many ways but still have trouble functioning in the community. The study is the first to confirm the existence of small numbers of schizophrenia patients with superior levels of verbal ability. 
McLaughlin College celebrates its 40th anniversary
Named after Col. Samuel McLaughlin, the first president of General Motors Canada, York’s McLaughlin College is celebrating its 40th anniversary with a host of activities May 9-11 designed to engage four decades of alumni, professors, Fellows and staff in reminiscing and in building new memories. 
Scientist-historian talks about what soil can reveal
Scientist and historian Verena Winiwarter of Klagenfurt University in Vienna, Austria, will discuss sustainability and what soil can reveal at a public lecture on Wednesday, May 7. Winiwarter will present her talk, titled "Sustainability Lost and Found? Lessons from the Long-term History of Soils in Europe.
