Graphic standards began in the early part of the last century to communicate a consistent image for emerging brands. This was done as a defence against competition and as a guarantee of origin, and therefore, quality.
York University has instituted a strategic brand development process to build an image that will communicate York’s message in a clear, consistent and dynamic way.
In 2002, as part of York University’s strategic brand development, York University created a visual identity system. The new visual identity celebrates and embodies York’s dedication to give students the first-rate education, experiences and credentials they need to define their own paths in life, break new ground and create new models for our changing society.
The visual identity comprises three elements: the new logo, the theme line and the crest.
- Building on the vitality and dynamism of the distinctive York red, the logo presents York in a new, contemporary and powerful way. The red box encloses a “U”, which both represents the idea of “University,” and symbolizes the openness that York students, graduates, faculty and staff display in defining new and different paths to success.
- The York theme line “redefine the possible” signifies York’s commitment to daring thinking, pushing the boundaries and achieving the extraordinary.
- The crest reflects York’s foundation and tradition; its use in the new identity system acknowledges this heritage as the University goes forward.
As York University develops its brand, it is imperative that the entire University communicate with a clear, consistent public identity. Adherence to the graphic standards by the entire University is critical to achieving this objective.
Every time a member of York University communicates with the public, it contributes to our reputation. Stationery, business cards, publications, newsletters, advertisements, websites, flyers, signs and other forms of communication represent not just the individual or program, but the entire University.
The most basic yet comprehensive component of a strong institutional image is a unified visual presentation. Collectively, all elements of York University must present to the world a consistent image that reflects our quality, professionalism and mission.
It is now more important than ever that we establish a clear set of standards to manage the master brand for the University as a whole.
This and future editions of York University’s Graphic Standards manual addresses the major issues of communication applications, but cannot possibly address every design situation that may arise. If in doubt, ask. Contact Marketing & Creative Services. These standards offer a framework to design within, delivering a consistency that is unmistakably recognized as York University.
General Guidelines for Use:
York's graphic standards are intended to guide the application of the visual identity across a variety of print communication materials only. The standards will be updated as required.
Please note that there are separate and distinct applications for other media, such as websites, products, displays, outdoor media, magazines and advertising.
It is crucial that users protect the integrity of the York identity; therefore, the logo and crest may not be altered in any way. The standards for the use of the logo and crest, and the relationship between them, follow in this manual. These standards ensure consistency of application, which is critical to protecting, building and promoting the York visual identity as part of the overall brand strategy.
York faculty and staff can access the template files using their Passport York account.
