'Something Is Happening' -The 2nd Annual Grad Film Showcase

The second annual Graduate Program in Film student showcase "Something Is Happening" features short works by two alumni and two current students:
L'EMPREINTE - Claudia Hebert (15 min)
"Those we have loved remain forever interwoven into places, songs, objects, tastes… we cannot get rid of these memories, but we can learn how to deal with them so that they do not hurt us anymore, so that we can move on and get "imprinted" by new people. L’empreinte investigates such an imprint through the soundtrack of the relationship of Sophie and Julien."
NOCTURNE - Kyath Battie (20 min)
Nocturne depicts the silent progress of a solitary young woman through a succession of five nocturnal spatial encounters in the urban forests of Toronto's complex ravine systems. Lit with ethereal and ambient lighting, she cryptically interacts with utilitarian architecture that has been embedded into the landscape, which takes on an imposingly naturalized stolidity of its own. These incongruent monuments placed within nature grow larger as she progresses on her uncertain quest, finally climaxing in her confrontation of a closed door, behind which lies a stairway leading down into subterranean regions.
MR. EDISON'S EAR - Franci Duran MFA '08 (32 min)
An inventive exploration of the visceral nature of sound and how we learned to capture and reproduce it over time. Anchored by the discovery of the phonograph by the brilliant, deaf inventor Thomas Edison, this visual and conceptual collage of rich archival footage and animation playfully traces the birth of technological reproduction and the beginnings of our modern, audio-drenched world. - Gisèle Gordon

CONTINUUM John Kneller MFA '07 (37 min)
Continuum comprises three films: This Film Has No Commercial Value, Separation and Kinestasis. "My aim with the trilogy was to strike a balance between aesthetic and political concerns and to keep the films open to interpretation by the spectator. The trilogy is, in fact, deceptively simple in its politics: the continuum of life is pictured as being in ever-increasing conflict with man’s industrial, political and economic evolution." The historical progression of the trilogy’s source materials includes footage from the 1920s, late 1940s and 980s. The photomechanical treatment of these materials becomes more and more prominent as the trilogy progresses; it is an emulation of the evolution of post-modern media and discourse.
