FASI Percussion Intensive for emerging and professional artists
Jun 4, 2012 to Jun 8, 2012
Immerse yourself in hand drum rhythm, technique and performance training in percussion in a range of world music traditions.
This one-week intensive for professional performers and developing artists, undergraduate and graduate students features workshops, seminars and a concert with world-renowned masters.
The intensive offers a comprehensive approach to the understanding and application of rhythm in a variety of cultural contexts. Through small group sessions, large ensembles, masterclasses and seminars, participants delve into principles of rhythm and learn techniques of improvisation in South Indian, Latin American and Afro-Cuban percussion. The intensive culminates in a recital.
The workshop is led by master percussionist Salvador Ferreras. Ferreras has toured on four continents. Former principal percussionist of the CBC Radio Orchestra, his solo and collaborative work is heard regularly on national radio. He has released three solo recordings: To Drive in L.A. (1986), Invisible Minority (1994) and Woodcuts (2001), and a trio recording with his ensemble Safa (2002). He was inducted into the British Columbia Entertainment Hall of Fame in 2003 and two years later was awarded the Willan Prize for outstanding contributions to choral music in BC.
A dedicated music educator and producer as well as performer, Ferreras is dean of the Vancouver Community College School of Music and artistic director of the Literary Cabaret at the Vancouver International Writers Festival. He has a PhD in Ethnomusicology from the University of British Columbia.
