FASI Screenwriting Boot Camp

Jul 9, 2012 to Jul 11, 2012

This three-day intensive introduces an exciting form of storytelling: one where the story does not remain on the page, but destined for the screen. An understanding of screenwriting isn’t just important for writers. Directors, actors, and anyone interested in a career in the film industry can benefit from experience in the scriptwriting process.

Participants will learn the nuts and bolts of the craft, from why a script looks the way it does, to the hidden structure behind your favourite movies. Topics covered include where to find ideas, how to create characters the audience will care about, and what to do with your script once it’s finished. The class will also screen and discuss scenes from popular films. Students will have the chance to turn their own story ideas into short scripts.

No prior screenwriting experience is required. All you need is an interest in film or television,  and one or two ideas for stories you might want to tell.

The workshop is led by film artists Stephen Davis and Caitlin Fryers.

British-born screenwriter Stephen Davis earned an MFA in Screenwriting at the American Film Institute and went on to work in development, reading scripts for a US-Canadian production company and an independent Los Angeles producer. Now based in Toronto, Davis continues to develop film and television projects for the UK, Canada and the US. He is the author of "An Insider’s Guide to Becoming a Screenwriter" (The Guardian, UK April 2011).

Caitlin Fryers holds a degree in English from the University of Winnipeg and a graduate diploma from the Professional Program in Screenwriting at UCLA. Her original feature script,  Where the Devil Ruled, captured the attention of several production companies in Los Angeles and New York. She is currently completing an MFA in Screenwriting at York University.

Workshop fee: $150 + HST
