FASI Workshop: Shakespeare and Friends Out Loud!
Jun 25, 2012 to Jun 27, 2012
Learn to make Shakespeare engaging and emotionally fulfilling for youth in this three-day workshop for educators and professionals, led by Shakespeare in Action‘s Michael Kelly assisted by a voice specialist.
The hands-on, studio-centred intensive is designed to create a stronger relationship between the traditional deskbound and practical approaches to teaching Shakespeare and other related poetry studies for the classroom. It fosters speech arts and oral presentation through improvisation, choral and related scene work, incuding active strategies for scene development and text analysis, techniques to demystify Shakespeare’s language, and innovative dynamics for independent and group learning. Teachers are guided on an active approach to the text and voice as they learn how to build acting companies in their classrooms.
The work does not require specialist drama skills, only the same qualities as any good teaching: preparation, a willingness to take calculated risks, and an open mind.
Michael Kelly is an actor, director, producer and teacher who is recognized internationally for his innovative programming in Shakespeare education. As founder and artistic director of Shakespeare In Action, Canada's leading classical theatre company for young people, he has attracted local, national and international media attention with features on TVO’s "Imprint", Canada AM, W-5, and CBC’s "As It Happens". His professional credits include directing many contemporary and Shakespearean plays as well as masterclasses for the Stratford Shakespeare Festival, Kentucky Shakespeare Festival and the Globe Theatre in London/UK. He has abridged a series of Shakespeare’s plays for young audiences aged 7-12, collectively titled Shakespeare for Kids.
Kelly has devised all of Shakespeare in Action’s artistic and educational work. He is a contract faculty member in the Department of Theatre at York University, and has also taught at George Brown College, Randolph Academy for the Arts and New Zealand's National Youth Drama School.
