Alumni & Student Speakers Series: "More than Cool: Creating a Digital Archive for Commemorative Tattoos" (Webinar)
Feb 5, 2014, 11am-12pm
In this Webinar, Professor Deborah Davidson will discuss why and how a group of scholars and community members came together to create the first digital archive for commemorative tattoos. A commemorative tattoo is a tattoo in honour of a person, relationship, animal, place, important event, part of one’s life-course, or life transition. While there is a growing body of research on tattooing as a form of body modification, tattooing as a way to commemorate, and as a form of public storytelling, is rarely noted in the scholarly or lay literature. This collaborative, interdisciplinary community project involves the creation of a digital online archive, as a site for collecting and cataloguing user-generated content of commemorative tattoos and accompanying narratives as cultural and historical data for public access.
