Mar 6, 2014, 7:30pm-9:30pm
The York University Jazz Orchestra directed by Mike Cadó and the JAZZFM.91 Youth Big Band led by Jules Estrin share the stage in a concert featuring classic repertoire including works by Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Oliver Nelson, Bob Brookmeyer, Stan Kenton and others.
For middle and secondary school students, the JAZZ.FM91 Youth Big Band provides an opportunity for exceptional student musicians to hone their skills while interacting with a new and diverse group of young musicians in a professional setting. Throughout the year, band members have the opportunity to attend workshops and masterclasses with some of the top musicians and educators in North America.
The York University Jazz Orchestra currently features 18 students from York University's music program, ranging from first-year to fourth-year undergraduates. Performing in this ensemble exposes these rising young jazz artists to the rich and diverse literature associated with the genre, helps them develop crucial musicianship skills, and offers valuable opportunities to hone improvisational skills.
