'Matricentric Feminism: Why Mothers Need a Feminist Theory/Movement of Their Own' by Andrea O'Reilly

Mar 13, 2014, 12pm-2pm

Andrea O’Reilly, PhD, is a professor in the School of Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies at York University, founder and director of the Motherhood Initiative for Research and Community Involvement, founder and editor-in-chief of the Journal of the Motherhood Initiative and founder and editor of Demeter Press, the first feminist press on motherhood. She is editor and author of 20 books on motherhood including, most recently, Academic Motherhood in a Post Second Wave Context: Challenges, Strategies, Possibilities (2012) and What do Mothers Need?: Motherhood Activists and Scholars Speak out Maternal Empowerment for the 21st Century (2012). In May 2014 she will be publishing the first-ever Reader on Mothers, Mothering and Motherhood across Cultural Difference. She is also editor of the first encyclopedia on motherhood (2010). In 2010, she was the recipient of the CAUT Sarah Shorten Award for outstanding achievements in the promotion of the advancement of women in Canadian universities and colleges. She is twice the recipient (1998, 2009) of York University’s Professor of the Year Award for teaching excellence. She, with her partner, is the proud mama of three fabulous and feminist adult children. When not writing or teaching, Andrea may be in her garden or tending to her two goats, two donkeys, seven cats and one very large St. Bernard dog.

The Museum of Motherhood will be inducting three motherhood activists/scholars into the Motherhood Hall of Fame next week, and Andrea O'Reilly will be one of the inductees.

It has been said that motherhood is the unfinished business of feminism. O’Reilly will explore the emergence of a mother-centred feminist theory and practice over the past two decades, looking specifically at the development of a motherhood movement in feminist activism and that of maternal theory in feminist theory and scholarship.
