FGS celebrates 50 years with open house

Mar 19, 2014, 1pm-3pm

It’s the 50th anniversary of the Faculty of Graduate Studies! Come join us for coffee, cake and treats in the Faculty of Graduate Studies offices to celebrate this major milestone and all of the people who make graduate studies great.

The 2013-2014 academic year marks an exciting milestone: the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Faculty of Graduate Studies at York University. The final reading and approval of the motion by the University’s Senate to create the Faculty happened on September 19, 1963, and York University’s first graduate programs — Psychology, Biology, Chemistry, Earth and Space Science, and Physics — began accepting applications in 1964. The Faculty has grown over the last 50 years to include 59 graduate programs, over 6000 students, and the largest body of active researchers on campus.

In honour of this major anniversary for the Faculty of Graduate Studies and in appreciation of the people who helped shape the Faculty over the last 50 years, we are planning a celebration March 19, with an Open House from 1:00 to 3:00 pm in the Faculty offices, 230 York Lanes. Along with celebrating the many achievements made by the Faculty and all of those professors and students who belong to it, we will also be taking this opportunity to reflect on this history of Graduate Studies, and to share the remembrances of those who were present during signal moments in the development of the Faculty. We look forward to celebrating with you the achievements of the past 50 years and the hope for the next 50.
