MFA Thesis Exhibition: Gord Bond - "Trying Not to Die"

Mar 27, 2014 to Apr 6, 2014

Severed limbs and disembodied heads saturate the paintings in Gord Bond's thesis exhibition, Trying Not to Die.

There is an anxiety in these paintings born of the inherent mortality of human life. It seems like a heavy burden to have these thoughts, but there is an underlying absurdity and humour which lightens them.

"Growing up watching cartoons like Bugs Bunny has left this indelible mark on me," says the artist. "Running off a cliff, Wile. E. Coyote takes a moment to grasp the situation, only to nonchalantly hold up a sign reading "uh-oh" before falling. Like Wile E. Coyote's sign, my paintings are juxtapositions between humour and anxiety, held up in a moment of absurd clarity."
