OTTAWA ALUMNI EVENT

THE HISTORIC Laurentian Club was the site of the Ottawa Branch of the York University Alumni Association event, held Thursday, March 9. York alumnus Dr. Steve MacLean [BSc'77,PhD'83, Hons.DSc'93], astronaut, Canadian Space Agency, hosted the wine tasting event and delivered an interactive talk on Canada's role in the International Space Station. Dr. MacLean, who is a member of the Board of Directors of the York University Alumni Association presented the Ottawa Branch with an autographed lithograph of the space station.The event was successful thanks to the efforts of the Ottawa Branch Executive Committee.

VANCOUVER ALUMNI EVENT

VANCOUVER'S ARBUTUS Club was the site for a recent York University alumni reception at which York alumna Carol Anne Letheren [MBA '77], CEO and secretary general of the Canadian Olympic Association, delivered the keynote address.

With Vancouver/Whistler vying for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games, Letheren's talk "Bidding to Host the Games" was especially timely. More than 70 alumni were in attendance and the event was covered as part of the11pm Global News Vancouver broadcast. Letheren is also a member of the Board of Directors of the York University Alumni Association.

The YUAA Vancouver Branch also participated in the annual SOAR (Southern Ontario Alumni Reunion) barbeque. This year's event took place on Saturday, July 8 at the Jericho Beach Pond. Alumni, family and friends had a great time.

 

GOLDEN TRIANGLE (KITCHENER/WATERLOO REGION) ALUMNI EVENT

THE GOLDEN Triangle Branch of the York University Alumni Association, in partnership with the Kitchener/Waterloo Chamber of Commerce, hosted a luncheon event on Thursday, March 30, 2000. The keynote speaker was York alumna Margot Franssen (BA'79) owner and partner, The Body Shop Canada. Franssen spoke on "Profits and Principles".

  MONTREAL BRANCH EVENT

The new Montreal Branch of the York University Alumni Association held its inaugural event on Thursday, Aug. 17, 2000. The Montreal Branch participated in the 2000 du Maurier Open. Such stars as Martina Hingls, Anna Kournikova and Venus Williams were featured in competition.

Alumni enjoyed the tennis match followed by a get together at a nearby pub. The alumni in attendance watched the action on the court and enjoyed the opportunity to begin discussions on further developing the branch in Montreal.

The Montreal Branch of the YUAA is looking forward to hosting many other events. WOMEN'S STUDIES CHAPTER

The Women's Studies Chapter of the York University Alumni Association is hosting its inaugural event on Thursday, Sept. 21, 2000 at 6:30pm in the Assembly Hall of Founders College. The keynote speaker will be the renowned artist, Dr. Helen Lucas.

CALGARY BRANCH EVENT

The Calgary Branch of the York University Alumni Association is hosting an author reading/book signing with renowned local authors, followed by an hors d'oeuvres and wine tasting reception on Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2000 at 7pm The event is being held at Pages Books on Kensington, 1135 Kensington Rd. NW, Calgary, (403) 283-6655. This is your opportunity to get reacquainted with York alumni and friends. Tickets are $15 per person.

NEW YORK BRANCH EVENT

The New York Branch of the York University Alumni Association is participating in the Canadian Club of New York Canadian University Alumni Reception. The Alumni Reception will be held on Oct. 26, 2000 from 6:30 to 8:30pm at the Penn Club, 30 West 44th Street, New York, New York. Tickets will be $15 at the door with cash bar. THE YUAA would like to invite all members of the York Community to join them for the first Annual Bruce Bryden Awards Dinner

Beginning in 2000, York University will annually recognize the dedication and contributions of alumni and friends of York University through the Bruce Bryden Alumni Recognition Awards. These awards will honour members of the York Community who have served with great distinction both the University and the community-at-large.

The Bruce Bryden Alumni Recognition Awards Dinner will take place in conjunction with the York University Alumni Association Annual General Meeting. The guest speaker will be Dr. Steve Maclean, BSc '77, PhD '83, D.Sc '93 - Astronaut, Canadian Space Agency. Dr. Maclean will be speaking about Canada's involvement in the International Space Program.

 

R. BRUCE BRYDEN R. BRUCE BRYDEN
The award has been named after York alumnus, the late Mr. R. Bruce Bryden (1943-1992), who graduated from York University in 1964 with a BA in sociology and economics. Mr. Bryden was the founding President of York's Alumni Association (1965-66) and an alumni member of York's Senate (1966-68). He joined the University's Board of Governors in 1971, and became the first alumni Chair of the Board of Governors. In 1974 he became a Fellow of McLaughlin College.

Bruce Bryden embodied the spirit of York, and his actions and accomplishments are an inspiration to the entire York community.

Managing Director, Artemis Management Group Inc.

John Bankes was first appointed to the York University Board of Governors in 1974 as a student member and has served continuously since 1985. He is currently a member of the York University Alumni Association Board of Directors, Chair of the Board of Governor's Student Relations Committee, Executive and Audit Committees and Chair of the Board of Trustees of the York University Pension Fund. He was also co-chair of York's recent National Campaign. Mr. Bankes is Managing Director of Artemis Management Group Incorporated.

David Collenette

   

ACHIEVEMENT CATEGORY

Honourable David Collenette, BA '69

Minister of Transport, MP - Don Valley East

The Honourable David Collenette was first elected to the federal parliament in 1974 and re-elected in 1980, 1993, and 1997. He was the first York University alumnus to be elected to parliament, as well as the first to be appointed to Cabinet. In June 1997, he was appointed Minister of Transport, where he has overseen the reorganization of the department. Mr. Collenette has previously served as Minister of National Defence and Veterans Affairs, Minister of State (Multiculturalism), Parliamentary secretary to the President of the Privy Council, Government House Leader and Postmaster General.

President, The Body Shop Canada

Margot Franssen is a Partner in the Body Shop Canada. Celebrating 20 courageous years in Canada, The Body Shop proves that profits and principles can go hand-in-hand. Ms. Franssen is a founding member of the Coalition on Women for Afghanistan, was awarded the United Nations Grand Award for her STOP Violence Against Women campaign, and was selected as a member of The Body Shop International Human Rights Award Jury. Ms. Franssen was appointed to the York University Board of Governors in 1991. She is a member of the University Advancement Committee and served as co-chair of the recent National Campaign for York University.

Seymour Schulich was appointed to the York University Board of Governors in 1996 and is currently a member of the Board's Investment Committee. Mr. Schulich is the leading benefactor of the Schulich School of Business and York University. He is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Franco-Nevada Mining Corporation Limited, based in Toronto.
