York alumna Susan King (MFA '79) learned early in her career that some so-called stars can be pretty ornery. In a shoot with a grumpy Pete Townsend of The Who, King recalls being upstaged, "I asked for a pose and he told me to go forth and reproduce," says King. "I decided I'd rather shoot regular people. You can talk to them without it landing in the gossip columns."

King has captured lots of smiles as a regular contributor to The Globe and Mail, Chatelaine, Toronto Life, and NOW magazine. She also has sold images to the National Photography Archives of Canada.

Corporate gigs with the likes of BASF and Magna International get her flown across Canada scouting locations or shooting finalists for the "If I were Prime Minister" contest.

King's second career as parent earns her respect as a mom and mentor. She has a son following in her artistic footsteps. "I try to teach him that it's OK if you're not perfect. The trick is believing it."
