HOMECOMING 2001

ORK HOMECOMING...it's that time of year when the community - alums, students, and staff - gather to reminisce, party and cheer their school on. And, for me, somehow the school year doesn't really start until the homecoming weekend. As a football player, when you take to the field there's an adrenaline rush... you feel the excitement in the air. For the players, homecoming is about pride and respect, a time for us to represent York and show others what we're made of. Once we step onto that field it's war and there are no prisoners. It's no-holds-barred until that final whistle ends the game and we are victorious.

Since 1978 they've been coming back. York alumni, students and staff have been making the annual pilgrimage, in greater numbers each year, to have fun and celebrate the history and success of York and its graduates. More than 1,500 alumni came back to campus that very first year in 1978. Today, over 5,000 take part in Homecoming weekend.

In the early days, the Homecoming football game was played on what was affectionately called Milewide Stadium. The stadium's name was a spoof on Denver's Milehigh Stadium, but contained no boundaries or fences, just temporary bleachers.

Today, the newly redesigned York Stadium offers an excellent facility to host York's fans who annually fill the stands to cheer on their team.

The theme for this year's Homecoming is Mardi Gras. That means live entertainment with a New Orleans-style Zydeco band The Crockodiles, interactive games, traditional New Orleans dance lessons, food and beverages, face painting for the kids, as well as nostalgic displays from York faculties, colleges and departments.

This year the York Yeomen take on the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Saturday, September 29 at 2pm.
