The Class of '96 goes job hunting

Last year's business grads continue to hold the lead among York faculties that have the greatest number of graduates employed full- time. The Schulich School of Business had 63 per cent of its graduates employed, while the number of Arts, Fine Arts, and Science grads with full-time jobs was 42%, 44% and 46% respectively.

A more valid picture for success on the job market can be obtained if the number of graduates working part-time by choice in Business, Arts, Fine Arts, and Science (8%,15%,23%, and 13%) is added to the figures for full-time employment. Schulich School of Business grads enjoyed a success rate of 71%, while the rate for graduates of Arts, Fine Arts and Science is 57%, 67% and 59%.

Fifty-seven per cent of business grads said their jobs make use of their education. Forty per cent of Science grads, and 35% and 23% of grads from Fine Arts and Arts respectively believed that their current jobs used their education.

The ISR report indicates that a majority of York graduates of all faculties have either a full-time job or are working part-time by choice. While a majority of business school grads report satisfaction with their jobs, only a bare majority do so in Science, and a minority do in Arts and Fine Arts.

Estimates of the time that it will take to find employment ranged from a low of nine weeks for business graduates, to a high of 19 weeks for Arts students.

York's Institute for Social Research conducted studies of all 3,106 graduates from the faculties of Arts, Fine Arts, Pure and Applied Sciences, and the Schulich School of Business in 1996.

How much are you worth?

How much do students expect to be paid? ISR's experience with a study on jobs for the class of '96 found all Business students who were unemployed were prepared to accept a salary of $29,999 or lower. Among unemployed Arts graduates, 50% are prepared to accept $29,999 or less and 7% will take anything. Comparable figures for graduates of Fine Arts are 31% ($29,999 or lower) and 31% (anything). Sixty-two per cent of Science graduates were ready to accept a job for $29,999 or less and 19% said they would work for a job at any salary.
