Getting the scoop on the student press
By Derek Chezzi

THERE'S no doubt that UNIVERSITY NEWSPAPERS are a great training ground for future journalists. A who's who of alumni and former York students who are now in the newspaper field includes: Warren Clements (BA'74), member of The Globe and Mail's editorial board; NOW magazine publisher Michael Hollett; Julian Beltrame (BA'74), Ottawa bureau chief for The Wall Street Journal; Jeannine Amber (BA'91), features editor at Vibe, a New York City-based magazine, CNN reporter Jonathan Mann (BA'80) and Elliot Shiff (BA'85) reporter for CBC's "The Magazine".

Many student journalists don't start out with the idea of working in the media. A lot of them simply "want to write". Frequently, newcomers who walk through excalibur's, or Glendon College's bi-lingual paper, Pro Tem's, doors haven't written a news story in their lives. Nevertheless, those who do apply - editors, writers, designers and photographers - all feel they play an important part in bringing the news to people who otherwise might not hear it.
