CALGARY BRANCH EVENT

The Calgary Branch of the York University Alumni Association hosted an author reading/book signing evening with renowned local authors on Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2000. The author reading was followed by a wine tasting and hors d'oeuvres reception. The event was held at Pages Books on Kensington, 1135 Kensington Rd. NW, Calgary. Authors in attendance were Barbara Scott ( The Quick, Violet Shyness of Their Eyes ), Ken McGoogan ( Canada's Undeclared War, Kerouac's Ghost ), Aritha Van Herk ( No Fixed Address, Places Far from Ellesmere ) and Jackie Flanagan ( Grass Castles ). Alumni enjoyed the opportunity to meet and socialize with one another and expressed interest in hosting other events. NEW YORK BRANCH EVENT

The New York Branch of the York University Alumni Association participated in the Canadian Club of New York Canadian University Alumni Reception. The Alumni Reception was held on Thursday, Oct. 26, 2000 at the Penn Club in New York City. The event was well attended with over 300 alumni from universities across Canada. York was well represented with more than 25 alumni in attendance. York will be participating in this event annually, hoping to include a dinner to follow the reception in subsequent years. SCHOOL OF WOMEN'S STUDIES ALUMNI CHAPTER EVENT

The School of Women's Studies Chapter (the only one its kind in the world!) of the York University Alumni Association hosted its inaugural event on Thursday, Sept. 21, 2000. The keynote speaker was the widely known and esteemed artist Dr. Helen Lucas. Dr. Lucas spoke on the subject of "Exploding the Security Myth". The inaugural event was very well attended and there is great interest in building the chapter. IN MEMORIUM: CAROL ANNE LETHEREN
CAROL ANNE LETHEREN

On February 2, 2001, York alumna Carol Anne Letheren (MBA'77), chief executive officer of the Canadian Olympic Association, passed away.

Letheren was speaking at an alumni event for York's Schulich School of Business when she collapsed. Between 1970 and 1976, while Letheren was a professor and coordinator of undergraduate studies in the York Department of Physical Education, she fostered relationships with athletes, coaches and other prominent figures in Canada's Olympic movement. Her empathy with athletes and coaches was an important part of her effectiveness as one of Canada'a most powerful sport executives.

Letheren earned her MBA from Schulich, and was an active supporter of the school, serving as president of the Schulich international alumni association and as a member of the York University alumni association board of directors.

A NIGHT TO REMEMBER!
Bruce Bryden Awards 2000

A capacity crowd filled the Northern Lights Ballroom at the Skydome Renaissance Hotel for the first annual Bruce Bryden Alumni Recognition Awards dinner on Oct. 17.

The award itself is named after the late Bruce Bryden, who served as founder of the York University Alumni Association (YUAA), as well as the first alumni Chair of the York University Board of Governors.

The evening included several tributes to the late Bruce Bryden and an impressive multi-media presentation by Astronaut, Dr. Steve MacLean, who flew directly from NASA to join his fellow YUAA Board members for the evening. Guests were provided with an insiders perspective on the mechanics and purpose of the international space station.

Award recipients for the evening included John Bankes, LLB/MBA'77 (Contribution Category), Minister David Collenette, BA'69 (Achievement Category), Margot Franssen, BA'79 (Leadership Category), and Seymour Schulich (Contribution Category - Friend).

All four of these individuals were selected for their proven spirit of selfless dedication and support of York University over numerous years.

Special thanks are extended to selection committee members Sandie Rinaldo, BA'73 (Fine Arts), Greg Sorbara (BA'78, LLB'81), and Michael Tulloch (BA'86, LLB'89).

Special thanks is also extended to the entire YUAA Board of Directors for their dedication in making this evening a tremendous success.
