Appointments, Honours & Awards

Professor Reg Lang, associate dean, Faculty of Environmental Studies, has been elected a Fellow by the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP) in recognition of his "outstanding contribution to Canadian planning."

The 1998 recipients of the Parents' Association University-Wide Teaching Awards are: Economics and Social Science professor John B. Ridpath; Physics and Astronomy and Mathematics professor Jurij Darewych; Philosophy professor Susan Dimock; Women's Studies professor Andrea O'Reilly; and teaching assistant Sherry Rowley.

Social Science professor Vijay Agnew was awarded the Myers Centre Award for the Study of Human Rights in North America for her book, Resisting Discrimination: Women from Asia, Africa and the Caribbean and the Women's Movement in Canada (1996).

Distinguished Research Professor of English Christopher Innes has been awarded a prestigious Canada Council for the Arts Killam Research Fellowship. The Killam awards support scholars engaged in research projects of outstanding merit in the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, health sciences, engineering and interdisciplinary studies within these fields.

Author, editor, poet and York English professor Barry Callaghan has been awarded the $15,000 W.O. Mitchell Literary Prize.

Dance professor Selma Odom has been chosen as the 1997-98 recipient of the Faculty of Graduate Studies Teaching Award. The award is bestowed annually upon a member of the Faculty of Graduate Studies who has displayed substantial, significant and sustained excellence, commitment and enthusiasm to graduate teaching at York.

Distinguished Research Professor Paul Lovejoy and his colleagues received a major grant of $1.88 million from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. The grant is for the project "The Development of the African Diaspora: The Slave Trade of the 'Nigerian' Hinterland, 1650-1900," and was awarded to Lovejoy's team under the SSHRC's Major Collaborative Research Initiative program.
