Distinguished Research Professor Norman Endler, whose work on anxiety, stress and coping is renowned worldwide, has been honoured as the 1997 recipient of the Donald A. Hebb Lifetime Achievement Award. The Hebb, conferred by the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA), is the most prestigious, scientific award to be granted in the discipline in Canada. Endler is known for, among other things, two widely used coping scales: Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations (CISS); and Coping with Health Injuries and Problems (CHIP).

Physics professors Sampa Bhadra and Bill Frisken are involved in an international physics research project that has the science world abuzz with the possibility of a new discovery related to the way the world is put together. Bhadra and Frisken are among 400 scientists from 12 countries who are members of an experimental research team called ZEUS. The team has been working for years on a particle physics project based at the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY) laboratory in Hamburg, Germany.

Biology professor Ken Davey was awarded the Walter Hitschfeld award by the Canadian Association of University Research Administrators (CAURA), a national association of professionals who administer research activities in Canadian universities.

Atkinson College administrative studies professor Joanne Magee is one of only 29 women to be designated a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario (ICAO). The fellowship is awarded to only an elite group of chartered accountants in recognition of outstanding career achievements, and services rendered to the community and the profession.

President emeritus Susan Mann received a doctorate honoris causa from the Université de Montréal at their spring convocation ceremony. She received the degree in recognition of her major contribution to making Quebec history more accessible across Canada, and for her promotion of the status of women in the Canadian academic community. Mann was also honoured for her long association with the Université de Montréal.
