About YUMSO!

Founded by mature student Edward Fenner in 2004 to help and serve York's growing mature student population. There are over 25,000 students at York that are age 21 or older (about half of the student body). Twenty-seven percent (about 14,000) of the student body are of mature age (25+).

YUMSO is a volunteer organization serving students attending any of York University's colleges and campuses, and for those learning remotely. Originally founded with the role of mature students helping each other understand the complexities of the university, its role expanded to include helping mature students adjust to and enjoy the back-to-school experience, offer mentorship and advice, and provide a communications network. Newer roles also include creating awareness of mature students' needs, issues, and concerns with York's faculty, staff, and administration, as well as with businesses, corporations, and various levels of governments, organizations, media, and special interest groups.
