For Jasrin Kaur (BCom \u201923), taking the leap from Italy to Canada was the start of a rewarding journey. Born to Indian parents and raised in Italy, she moved to Canada five years ago to begin her undergraduate studies as an international student. Drawn to the unique combination of business and technology courses, she enrolled in York\u2019s Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) program with a focus on Information Technology, allowing her to not only explore her interest in tech but also learn skills in business and communications to prepare her for a future leadership role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYork stood out because I wanted to be in tech but also be able to network, have meetings and build connections\u2014a career path that not many South Asian women choose,\u201d says Jasrin.  \u201cI prefer not following a straightforward path, and I wanted a more challenging, out-of-the-box career. The program offered at York, did just that: a class that allowed me to connect with students from across the school, bringing different interests, goals, careers and backgrounds under one roof and an opportunity to strengthen my professional network.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Based in Brampton, Jasrin reflects fondly on her commutes to and from York, where she built friendships and had the opportunity to network. Her advice: \u201cTalk to everyone on your ride, don\u2019t just go to class and go home. Volunteer, join clubs, talk to that person next to you. The relationships you build during your years at York will shape your future.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

During her third year in the program, Jasrin secured an internship as a project coordinator at CIBC, an opportunity made possible through the York program that gave her a real-world foundation and set her on her successful career path. Jasrin was able to stay at CIBC on a part-time basis, eventually transitioning to a full-time role upon graduation. She is currently leading cross-functional teams on complex IT projects as a senior project coordinator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jasrin credits her experience at York for giving her the knowledge and confidence needed to enter the corporate world. She also learned the importance of visibility and stepping outside your comfort zone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe internship was a great opportunity because I was getting support from York,\u201d says Jasrin. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t just about the professional aspect; it also greatly impacted my personal life and helped shape my personality today. In my day-to-day when I'm interacting with people, I'm more confident and I'm able to put myself out there. The support from my parents and growing up in Europe, gave me the opportunity to be exposed to different cultures and mindsets. I think that's where I found my motivation to make an impact outside of my corporate job.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jasrin currently serves as a WomenTech global ambassador, a leading community for women in tech representing over 150 countries worldwide that advocates for inclusivity and career growth. In this role, she is able to turn her passion for mentorship into meaningful impact, supporting and inspiring women in technology, while helping develop their careers in the industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking ahead, Jasrin is planning to enrol in an MBA program at York University and continue mentoring and breaking barriers for women in tech.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
