The new funding further enhances York\u2019s commitment to the field of AI. York took the top spot among Canada\u2019s comprehensive universities for advancing understanding of AI in artificial intelligence publications in the latest edition of Canada\u2019s Innovation Leaders, by Research Infosource Inc. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/research\/connected-minds\/connected-minds-funds-7-5m-in-trailblazing-research-to-shape-a-just-and-inclusive-tech-future\/\">inaugural Connected Minds Team Grants<\/a>, funded through the Canada First Research Excellence Fund, will help develop unbiased AI and creative technology tools that will benefit all of society equally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:22px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Creative Collectivities: Rehearsing Equitable Futures Through Participatory Technologies<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Led by Professor <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ampd.yorku.ca\/people\/laura-levin\/\">LAURA LEVIN<\/a><\/strong> of York University\u2019s School of Arts, Media, Performance &amp; Dance (AMPD) and Assistant Professor Michael Wheeler of Queen\u2019s University, this team will explore how AI, virtual reality and immersive theatre can reshape social connection and collective behaviour. Led by York University Associate Professor <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/lassonde.yorku.ca\/users\/hossein\">HOSSEIN KASSIRI<\/a><\/strong> of York\u2019s Lassonde School of Engineering and Queen\u2019s University Professor Gavin Winston, this team is developing a smart, wearable EEG headset device designed for clinical accuracy, long-term comfort and ethical use in everyday environments. A team, led by Queen\u2019s University Associate Professor Claire Davies and co-led by York University Associate Professor <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/discover.academics.yorku.ca\/Shital.Desai\">SHITAL DESAI<\/a> <\/strong>of AMPD, is developing AI-driven communication technologies, educational tools and workplace strategies to improve employment access for Canadians with speech impairments. This project is led by York University Associate Professor <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/discover.academics.yorku.ca\/Maya.Chacaby\">MAYA CHACABY<\/a><\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/glendon\/\">Glendon Campus<\/a>, a research associate in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/research\/cikl\/\">Centre for Indigenous Knowledges and Languages<\/a>, and Associate Professor <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ampd.yorku.ca\/people\/rebecca-caines\/\">REBECCA CAINES<\/a> <\/strong>of York\u2019s AMPD and program coordinator of creative technologies at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/markham\/\">Markham Campus<\/a>. It blends Anishinaabe knowledge with immersive technology to create <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/aifprojects\/biskaabiiyaang-indigenous-metaverse\/\">Biskaabiiyaang<\/a>, an Indigenous-governed virtual learning environment designed to support language revitalization, cultural resurgence and healing. Co-created with Indigenous communities, this project charts a path for ethical innovation that advances Indigenous cultural resurgence, strengthens digital sovereignty and reshapes how technology serves diverse knowledge systems.
