Community Update #16 - Please wear your mask or face covering

Community Update #16 - Please wear your mask or face covering

I am writing to provide you with an update on the University’s mask or face covering protocol, which has recently been revised to align with newly introduced provincial requirements. COVID-19 and the ongoing need to wear masks or face coverings continues to evolve and we will keep the York community informed as new updates are introduced through the applicable government bodies.

Effective immediately, anyone entering an indoor space on any York University property, including all campuses, work sites and satellite offices, must wear a mask or face covering that covers their mouth, nose and chin completely. If you are on campus, please continue to practise physical distancing and try to stay two metres apart from others. Masks are now required in indoor public spaces regardless of current physical distancing guidelines.

Please wear your mask or face covering when entering a building and for the entire duration of your stay, unless an exemption applies. Indoor spaces at York include, but are not limited to, classrooms, administrative buildings, offices, meeting rooms and common areas in all residences, washrooms, hallways and elevators.

Signs are posted at the entrances to all buildings to remind community members to wear their mask or face covering while indoors. Wearing a mask or face covering is for everyone’s safety and well-being. When I wear a mask or face covering, I am protecting you, and when you wear a mask or face covering, you are protecting me.

Thus far, the York community has come together admirably with most adhering to Public Health guidelines during these critical times. We would urge everyone to continue to be vigilant in doing so, particularly in light of the increasing COVID-19 cases locally and provincially.

Community members may require accommodation for a medical condition or disability which precludes them from wearing a mask or face covering. We would ask that community members exercise discretion and patience should they observe a fellow community member not wearing a mask or face covering. Please reach out to your reporting manager or associate dean to help you address or direct your concerns.

If you have any questions about face coverings or Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), you can discuss them with your reporting manager or associate dean or contact Health, Safety and Employee Well-Being (HSEWB) at hsewb@yorku.ca.

Our continued diligence is the key to preventing the spread of COVID-19 and we thank you for your continued support in these efforts.

York University will continue to revise and update you on its Mask and Face Covering Protocol as per the latest information from the government and other applicable regulators.

Sincerely,

Rhonda L. Lenton
President & Vice-Chancellor
