Important Updates to Canadian Quarantine Requirements

Important Updates to Canadian Quarantine Requirements

If you are a continuing international student and have not done so already, please fill out the International Student Location Confirmation. Complete the Confirmation whether you are in Canada or outside Canada.

On June 21, 2021, Canada announced changes to the federal quarantine requirements for those who are fully vaccinated.

Effective July 5 at 11:59PM, international travellers entering Canada who are fully vaccinated (two doses) with a vaccine approved in Canada will no longer need to quarantine or take the Day 8 COVID test. Travellers will still need to meet all federal requirements for entry to Canada.

We are waiting for further details but here’s what we know so far for international students. We will continue to update you as more information becomes available from the Canadian government:

  • If you have been fully vaccinated with a vaccine approved in Canada:
    • You must still do a pre-departure COVID test 72 hours before departure and receive a negative result.
    • You must enter in your proof of vaccination into ArriveCAN prior to your departure. The verification must be in English or French (translated copies are allowed).
    • You will still need to do a COVID test upon arrival in Canada.
    • You will need to prepare and present a quarantine plan in case you test positive upon arrival in Canada.
    • If your test result is positive upon entry to Canada, you will be required to quarantine and follow all quarantine requirements. If your test result is negative and you are asymptomatic, you will not be required to quarantine or do the Day 8 COVID test.
    • You should carry documentation of your proof of vaccination and other documentation with you to show immigration officers upon arrival in Canada.
    • You must inform York of your entry to Canada via the Quarantine Request Form. Further instructions for this will be available by June 30.
    • You must meet all other federal requirements for entry to Canada.
  • If you have not yet been vaccinated, have only received one dose of your two-dose vaccine or the vaccine you received is not yet approved in Canada:
    • There are no changes to the quarantine requirements:
      • You will need to complete the mandatory 14-day quarantine upon entry to Canada, including the three-day stay at a federally approved hotel.
      • You will need to complete a pre-departure COVID test 72 hours before your flight’s departure, a COVID test upon arrival in Canada and a COVID test on Day 8 of your quarantine.
      • You must follow all requirements of York’s quarantine plan.
      • You must meet all other federal requirements for entry to Canada.
  • Failure to comply with quarantine requirements, including (but not limited to) breaking quarantine, not taking the required COVID tests or falsifying documents is an offence under the federal Quarantine Act and could lead to fines, imprisonment or both.
