Updated International Travel Guidance

Updated International Travel Guidance

On February 28th 2022, the Government of Canada lifted the world-wide advisory to avoid non-essential travel outside of Canada. Given this change York will resume University sanctioned and sponsored travel effective immediately.

Though travel advisories have been lifted, please be advised that COVID-19 related restrictions continue to impact international travel and operations for our partner institutes. Everyone should consult the Government of Canada’s travel advisory based on their intended destination and follow travel health notice for Covid19 and international travel.  It is advisable for all travellers to develop and follow a travel risk assessment health and safety plan in coordination with Safety abroad.  All York community members are encouraged to register their travel on the York Travel registry as this will allow York to offer support and emergency assistance. Please email Safety abroad at safetyabroad@yorku.ca to register your travel plans and if you have any questions.

International programs

York is pleased to resume University-sponsored or sanctioned international programs.

All students participating in international programs (exchange, internships, coop, academic placements) must complete the following Risk Management Steps:

  • The borders of the Host country should be open and accepting international students
  • Participation in pre-departure Risk Management training, in coordination with Safety Abroad
  • Complete the Safety Abroad Travel registry
  • Confirmation of comprehensive health insurance, including COVID-19 coverage
  • Comply with The University’s vaccination policy

International travel for graduate students (Research)

All graduate student travel will be resumed to Levels 1 & 2 countries per Global Affairs Canada travel advisories. Levels 3&4 are considered higher risk travel and guidance can be provided to ensure travel related risk can be mitigated.

Graduate students should contact Safety Abroad when planning their trips to complete the pre-departure travel risk assessment and complete the travel registry.  They can also work through their supervisor, FGS, VPRI and Safety Abroad to develop a health and safety plan.

International travel for faculty, researchers, instructors

Everyone is encouraged to visit the Government of Canada's travel advice and advisories for your destination(s) before making international travel arrangements. The site will help you to verify health recommendations and safety and security information, while keeping you apprised of the COVID-19 situation and required public health measures for your destination.

Faculty, researchers, principal investigators and instructors should also check on any restrictions from the funder as it relates to travel and travel related insurance. Eligible expenses on research grants will vary with respect to travel and covid19 related expenses and it is the grantee’s responsibility to confirm the eligibility of expenses prior to incurring them.

University-funded business travel

All University-funded business travel can now resume.  All travellers must adhere to the host country or institution’s health and safety requirements. If you require more information about specific destinations and related safety concerns, questions can be submitted to safetyabroad@yorku.ca.

We will continue to monitor the situation regularly and provide updates should circumstances change.Safety Abroad and York International will also be available to provide support to assess and develop risk mitigation plans for international travel, where and when required.
