Project Summary

This project offers a low-cost device to quantify analytes in Lateral flow assays (LFAs). LFAs are a rapid testing method for the detection of chemical compounds present in a liquid. Though such tests are usually binary, this device quantifies the concentration using Lock-In Thermometry. The LFA’s test lines are illuminated by a modulated laser which excites the gold nanoparticles within them. They in turn release infrared radiation, the magnitude of which is directly correlated to the concentration in the sample. With this device, the resolution of every LFA increases. This means more details for field medical professionals when making their diagnoses, cheaper test results for pharmaceutical manufacturers, and easier tests for agricultural workers.
