Project Summary

With the ever-accelerating increase of artificial intelligence and machine learning applications, it is more important than ever to make sure that AI and machine learning are being developed and deployed ethically. Companies, government institutions, and academic/research institutions must consider the social and community impacts of their technological advancements and acknowledge potential drawbacks in addition to all of AI’s beneficial applications. Transparency, responsibility, and privacy are all important when implementing AI and machine-learning technologies, as is attention to the many layers of social, environmental, and economic issues. This project aims to support informed engagement from a broad cross-section of communities that may have stakes in the development and application of various AI technologies. A diverse research team will consider what these societal stakeholders need to know and how to convey that knowledge in an accessible, equitable fashion; they should also devise a strategy to prepare for and avoid ethical challenges and be capable of acting when unintended consequences arise. Students interested in this project might have backgrounds in communications, public/legal policy, business–community relations, the social sciences, software engineering/computer science, ethics, human rights and advocacy, and marginalized communities.
