Project 34

Challenge Question

How can we collect global experiences on the effectiveness of strategies and mechanisms for supporting elders across a wide variety of cultures and contexts?

Partner: Barnes Management Group

Project Summary

ycn dots

The current COVID-19 pandemic has exposed significant weaknesses in how we perceive elders in our communities and how the current long-term care system in Canada functions. Different cultures relate to and interact with elders in different ways, and Canada is uniquely situated as a hub of cultural diversity to share and learn from the range of backgrounds reflected in our population. This project aims to collect stories and ideas about how cultures and societies around the world view and value older adults in their communities, and to engage with these global experiences to explore effective strategies and mechanisms for supporting elders across a wide variety of cultures and contexts. Specific questions include how people remain connected socially as they age, and what supports people would appreciate having as they age. We are seeking a diverse research team to devise a technology-based means of gathering and sharing these perspectives, with students interested in communications, digital media, social work, aging populations and elder care, health and society, anthropology/sociology, and community engagement. Team members might also have experience in design, web development, and digital communication.
