Project Summary

ycn dots

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, people have been experiencing heightened isolation and/or poor mental health. Problems such as domestic violence and abuse have increased globally by about 20% since the start of COVID-19, with many individuals quarantining in toxic or difficult home environments. Others are quarantining alone and experiencing the detrimental effects of social isolation. These circumstances have proven especially trying on special needs individuals with difficult home environments, occupants of residence homes lacking a sense of community, and those in domestic abuse situations. Many are not aware of the resources available to them during quarantine, such as organizations and helplines that provide support; when these resources are used, the traffic to these organizations has increased significantly, making it difficult to keep up with need. The goal of this project is to identify methods to increase awareness and education about domestic violence, improve support systems to better help victims, and explore ways to support families and organizations working with domestic violence victims during COVID-19. Interested students might have background knowledge in social work/mental health fields, community support, marginalization, and communications. Students should come from a diverse range of backgrounds and have excellent organizational and collaboration skills.
