CERLAC Presents: Brazil as Amefrica
Coined by Lélia González (1988), Amefrica makes reference to the Black and Indigenous DNA of Terra Brasilis and to the struggles of social groups that the colonial project and postcolonial social order rendered subaltern.
Join us for a discussion of race-ethnicity and past and present decolonial struggles in Brazil:
- Dr. Barbara Daibert, Comparative Literature and Critical Racial Theory, Visiting Professor at the University of Toronto, “Ghosts of Slavery: Traumatic memories and the agony of a mestizo Brazil.”
- Dr. Eliana Cogoy, Social Work, Federal University of Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul, “Quilombola women and public communication: Social protection (or lack thereof) in rural Pelotas and urban Porto Alegre, Brazil.”
