SUMMARY:Reading Group: Touristic Zoopolitics: Colonial Capitalist Zoopolitics and Touristic Governance
DESCRIPTION:The Centre for Feminist Research and the Department of Politics at York University invite you to join us for a reading group discussion! This is an incredible opportunity to meet with two scholars from Leibniz University and Cardiff University and engage in meaningful and impactful discussion.\nWednesday, December 9, 2026, 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM\n\nRoom: Kaneff Tower 626\n\nReading Group\nTouristic Zoopolitics: Colonial Capitalist Zoopolitics and Touristic Governance\nWhile the global tourism system has immense governing power, how it governs and with what effects and consequences still needs theoretical development. This article theorises and interrogates how Western colonial capitalist zoopolitics – that is, the entangled politics of (de)valorisation and (de)humanisation – shape the Western tourism system and how it governs subjects and spaces. Ultimately, the article argues that touristic zoopolitics are constituted by, and help sustain, the Western colonial capitalist order.\n\nDr. Sarah Becklake is a Research Associate/Lecturer at the Institute for Sociology at Leibniz University Hannover. Her research interests and expertise focus on the intersections of global coloniality, human spatial (im)mobilities, development, (in)security, and governance. Her work has been published in Globalizations, Conflict, Security, and Development, Tourism Geographies, and Space and Culture, among other venues.\nDr. Elisa Wynne-Hughes is a Reader in International Relations at Cardiff University.\nShe studies transnational and urban (im)mobilities, exploring urban tourism, responses to sexual harassment, and Soviet micro-districts as sites where power operates through practices such as touristic governance, coloniality and neoliberal authoritarianism. Her work has been published in Tourism Geographies, Political Geography and Review of International Studies.\nThe discussion will be moderated by Prof. Anna M. Agathangelou \nProfessor Agathangelou teaches in the areas of international relations and women and politics. Some of her areas of expertise are time and temporality in global politics, the body, time and ecology, international feminist political economy and feminist/postcolonial and decolonial thought. She is the co-director of Global Change Institute, Cyprus and was a visiting fellow in the Program of Science, Technology and Society at John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard (2014-2015). She is currently involved on two multinational SSHRC partnership research projects focusing on sexual violence and human security, global governance, and biotechnology. She has researched ethnic conflict in Cyprus, as well as reconstruction in post-conflict societies with a focus on sexual violence, displaced peoples and the missing.\nRegistration is required:https://www.yorku.ca/cfr/touristic-zoopolitics-colonial-capitalist-zoopolitics-and-touristic-governance-event/ ( https://www.yorku.ca/cfr/touristic-zoopolitics-colonial-capitalist-zoopolitics-and-touristic-governance-event/ )\nYou can download the material for reading at the above link as well.\n
