Programming Department: 2000
The year 2000 offers us another opportunity to provide listeners
with community programming at its best. I’m always amazed at the
feedback I get from listeners to the station about our programming.
Many of the comments are complimentary, others are negative but all indicate
that they care enough to share their views. I thank them all for
their opinions.
As program director, I am always conscious of the fact that the
station provides a voice for many people not represented in mainstream
media. The fact that we live in such a diverse community gives us
the perfect opportunity to bring many different views to the airwaves.
Some of the views are common in society, others challenge and will continue
to challenge the status quo. We are radio with an edge, willing to
push the envelope and bold enough to deal with the consequences.
In its January 2000 Campus Radio Policy, the CRTC defines us
as a “community-based campus” station. “This is a station with programming
produced primarily by volunteers who are either students or members of
the community at large. The training of professional broadcasters
is not the station’s primary objective.” This definition guides everything
we do here at the station, especially the training of volunteers.
You should call us at (416) 736-5293 if you want to volunteer.
The Commission considers that campus stations have an important
role to play in the development, support and exposure of local talent.
CHRY supports local talent- singers, poets, performers- and we will continue
to do so. Listen on a daily basis and you will hear about CD release
parties, interviews with local artists and their music or spoken word.
We plan to do more, we will be organizing workshops on interviewing skills,
writing bios/artist profiles and much more. I will be enlisting your
help if you are knowledgeable in the various fields.
Thanks for your support throughout the year.
