BRINGING NATURE-BASED CLIMATE ACTION INTO CITIES IN CHALLENGING TIMES

A multi-stakeholder side event bringing together practitioners and scientists to discuss nature-based climate actions in urban areas
that support adaptation, resilience and health. Panelists discuss climate-smart recovery from pandemics and economic downturns.
Methods for tracking effectiveness are showcased with regional examples of best practices.
The side event is held on site at the UN CLimate Change Conference COP27 and livestreamed.

Speakers

Idil Boran, York University (Canada)
Idil Boran is professor of applied environmental governance and Faculty Fellow at the Dahdaleh Institute for Global Health Research at
York University (Canada). Idil is based in the Philosophy Department and serves as Associate Director CIFAL York. Specializing in
interdisciplinary research and cross-sectoral outreach and partnerships, Idil's research focuses on climate, biodiversity, and health
interlinkages. Also an associate researcher (non-resident) at the German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS), Idil has 10
years of experience at the UN Climate Change meetings as an observer and is attending COP27 Sharm El-Sheikh as York University’s
Head of Delegation.
Sander Chan, Radboud University
Sander Chan is assistant professor in the Department of Geography, Planning and Environment, Nijmegen School of Management,
Radboud University. He is a political scientist specializing in transnational climate action and environmental politics. His research areas
include public-private partnerships, sustainable development, orchestration of transnational action, and corporate voluntary
environmental behaviour. He is an adjunct assistant professor at the Copernicus institute of Sustainable Development, Utrecht University.
Sander is also a steering committee member of Galvanizing the Groundswell of Climate Actions, a network that facilitates open dialogues,
aiming to bring climate actions from cities, regions, companies, and other groups to a higher level of scale and ambition.
Andrew Deneault, German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS)
Andrew Deneault is a researcher at the German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS). His background is in international
cooperation, urban development, and development economics. Areas of research include transnational cooperative initiatives,
strengthening climate action in the global South, urban climate action, and Nature-based Solutions.
James Orbinski, Dahdaleh Institute for Global Health Research, York University (Canada)
James Orbinski is a medical doctor with over thirty years of humanitarian experience in war, famine, epidemic disease, genocide, and
circumstances of political fragility. He is professor and inaugural Director of the Dahdaleh Institute for Global Health Research at York
University which focuses on global health and humanitarianism, planetary health and global health foresighting. Dr. Orbinski believes in
actively engaging for a more just, fair, and humane world.
Gisela Habel, BMZ
Gisela Habel is head of Division 424 Environmental policy, biodiversity, forests, marine conservation. Gisela Habel has studied law and has
been working in development cooperation over the last 20 years, covering a broad range of areas and different postings including several
years at the German Embassy in Daressalam / Tanzania and the G7/G20 Sherpa-Team in the Federal Chancellery.
Nathalie Pettorelli, Zoological Society of London (SZL)
Dr Nathalie Pettorelli is a senior conservation scientist at the Zoological Society of London, and the co-chair of the IUCN rewilding working
group. Her work focuses on assessing, predicting and mitigating the impacts of global environmental change on biodiversity and
ecosystem services, with a particular focus on climate change.
Bethan Laughlin, Zoological Society of London (SZL)
Bethan Laughlin – Senior Policy Specialist - The Zoological Society of London (ZSL)
Within ZSL, my focus is on the guidance, development and implementation of science backed policy solutions to the biodiversity and
climate crisis in the work of protecting, restoring and renewing our natural world.
Deborah Delgado Pugley, PUCP
Deborah Delgado Pugley is an Associate Professor and researcher at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica del Peru, with specialization in
environmental and climate policies at the international and territorial level. Her field experience centers around the Amazon regions of
Bolivia and Peru, where she has led research teams on climate change, Indigenous movements, human rights, natural resource
management, and gender. During the last ten years, she has followed the UNFCCC process.
André Ferretti, Boticário Group Foundation
André Ferretti is from Brazil and works at the Boticário Group Foundation for Nature Protection. He is a senior manager of biodiversity
economics, focusing on climate change adaptation and biodiversity conservation, with experience in nature-based solutions, ecological
restoration, payment for environmental services, protected areas and environmental impact businesses.
Ricardo Aguiar Borges, Society for Wildlife Research and Environmental Education, SPVS, Brazil
Ricardo Aguiar Borges is the marketing and networking manager for the Atlantic Forest Great Reserve Initiative. He graduated from the
Federal University of Parana, Brazil, specializing in nature and conservation. In the SPVS Nature Reserves, in Antonina and Guaraqueçaba,
he works in the area of financial sustainability of RPPNs (via ICMS Ecológico), with environmental education at the Nature Conservation
School and public outreach.
Anke Manuela Salzmann, Boticário Group Foundation
Anke Manuela Salzmann is a Business and Biodiversity Specialist, graduated in Forest Engineering, with a Masters in Conservation
Leadership from the University of Cambridge. For ten years she has been dedicating her professional career to nature conservation;
especially by engaging businesses in recognizing how nature relates to their longevity. At Boticario Group Foundation she is currently
leading the Viva Agua Initiative, which gathers stakeholders from different sectors to foster water security and climate change adaptation
through conservation and restoration of nature and impact investing in a strategic water basin in southern Brazil.
