HELM (Health Engaged Learning and Mentorship)

The Health Engaged Learning and Mentorship (HELM) Program is a supportive, self-paced academic recovery program for students in the Faculty of Health at York University. It’s designed to help students on academic warning or probation develop key skills, access personalized guidance, and re-engage successfully with their studies.

Our Mission

To equip Faculty of Health students with the essential tools, ongoing support, and mentorship needed to succeed academically and develop confidence for their future careers.

Our Vision

A thriving, resilient student community that fosters a culture of learning, growth, and connection, where individuals support each other’s success and embrace challenges as opportunities for personal and academic development.

History

HELM was launched in 2024 to support Health students facing academic challenges. Alongside vigorous research and environmental scans – HELM evolved into a comprehensive program that helps students reclaim control over their academic journey.

Who We Serve

HELM is designed for undergraduate students in the Faculty of Health who are currently on academic probation or at risk of it. We work closely with academic advisors to identify and enroll students in need of support.

How HELM Works

How Does HELM Work?

1
Online Modules (via eClass)
Start with five online themes on academic skills, personal growth, and success strategies — including videos, reflections, and interactive activities.
2
Academic Advising
Meet one-on-one with an advisor to review progress, plan next steps, and get help with petitions or appeals if needed.
3
Enrolment Block Removal
After completing steps 1 and 2, your enrolment block is lifted, giving you access to course registration (if all other conditions are met).
4
Peer Mentorship
Get paired with an upper-year Peer Mentor for support, motivation, and advice on navigating university life.
Important: All HELM steps must be completed in order to continue studies in the Faculty of Health at York.
