The Schulich School of Business and the Graduate Programme in Dance offers a three-year combined Programme leading to both a Master of Business Administration and Master of Arts degree.
The combined M.B.A./M.A. degree programme offers students a unique opportunity for study. Graduates of this highly challenging programme will follow career paths in which knowledge of the arts and of management and business are required. The M.B.A./M.A. Programmes complement each other in focus and offer excellent preparation for those interested in management careers in the arts and cultural sector.
More information about this program can be found on the website of Schulich School of Business.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR THE COMBINED DEGREE
For acceptance into this combined Programme, students need to meet the application requirements for both the M.A. and the M.B.A. as outlined by the University.
Students must have a four-year undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in Fine Arts earning a minimum B+ average. Students must earn a score on the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) that meets or exceeds the minimum score required for admission into the M.B.A. Programme. Students should have relevant work experience within the arts or cultural industries. (This will be assessed by the Admissions Committee which is made up of the Graduate Programme Director in Dance, the M.B.A. Arts and Media Coordinator, the Admissions Officer from the Schulich School of Business and a representative from the Faculty of Graduate Studies.)
Students may apply for admission after the successful completion of one year in either the M.B.A. Programme or Dance Graduate Programme.
DEGREE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE COMBINED DEGREE
Year 1
Option 1:
27.0 credit-hours of the required foundations of management core courses in the first year of the Masters of Business Administration Programme, including Arts & Media 6301 3.0, Introduction to Arts and Media Administration, in the first semester.
|
Option 2:
M.A. REQUIREMENTS IN FIRST YEAR
Students in the combined Programme should take all of their courses in the M.B.A. Programme in this dedicated year of study, though in certain cases, it might be appropriate for a student to take a course in the Faculty of Fine Arts. (In certain cases, the order may be reversed and a student might enter the Fine Arts Programme first. This is particularly true for students who might apply for the combined Programme after being accepted into a graduate Programme in Fine Arts.)
|
Note: However, it is recommended that students complete the M.B.A. required courses before focussing on their specialized studies in Fine Arts.
Strategic Management 6000 3.0: Strategic Management
Arts & Media Elective 3.0
Dance 5200 3.0: Research Methods
Dance 5300 3.0: Movement Observation
|
Management 6100 3.0: Strategy Field Study
Dance 5310 3.0: Dance Writing
|
Note: Dance students must complete the equivalent of ten semester courses of which six must be in Dance. Students in Dance might also choose the major research paper/project route. In this case, course requirements in Dance would be completed in the second year of study and the third year of study would focus on the completion of the research requirement.
Students may take two semester courses in the M.B.A. Programme from the optional courses related to their specific interest; these courses might include not-for-profit management courses, legal aspects in the arts, exporting the arts, entrepreneurial studies, or management of artistic resources, etc. and should include the required policy course, if it has not been completed. Courses may, but need not, be taken from the Arts and Media slate. Depending on the specific Programme and requirements, students may be encouraged to take some of these courses during the previous summer semester.
PROGRAMME LENGTH
The normal full-time load is 15.0 credit-hours of courses per term. Students who enroll in the combined Programme should be able to complete it within a three year period. In so doing, students will meet all of the core Programme requirements in each individual Programme. Cognate requirements in each Programme can be filled through course work in the parallel Programme.
ARTS AND MEDIA GRADUATE DIPLOMA
Students may add an Arts and Media Graduate Diploma to their combined M.B.A./M.A. degrees. The Arts and Media Graduate Diploma requirements can be found on http://www.bus.yorku.ca/, or in the calendars of the Schulich School of Business and the Faculty of Graduate Studies.
If students are doing a graduate diploma in Arts and Media Administration, as well as the two degrees, the summer semester, after their third year of study, would be an appropriate time to meet the internship requirement, although some students may be able to complete an internship at an earlier point in their studies.
