Global Health Seminar: Elevating the Social Science Gaze on tuberculosis with Dr. Amrita Daftary

Commemorating World Tuberculosis Day, Dahdaleh Institute Faculty Member Dr. Amrita Daftary will be giving a seminar presentation on "Elevating the social science gaze on tuberculosis". Dr. Daftary is Assistant Professor in Global Health at York University, and Associate at the Centre for the AIDS Programme of Research in South Africa at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. She has been studying the social contexts of tuberculosis, especially drug resistant TB and TB-HIV confection, from behavioural and social research lenses for over 15 years. She is excited to share news about a global initiative she has launched with the Dahdaleh Institute to connect social science TB scholars, learners and advocates, and introduce the students at York that has engaged in TB research.  

She will also be joined by Nawang Yanga who will discuss A Comparative Analysis of Tuberculosis Policies and Programs in Tibetan Refugee Settlements in India and Indigenous Communities in Canada . Nawang is MA candidate in Health Policy and Equity at York University and her research interests include refugee health and health equity. Her primary research project will take on a comparative analysis of the prevalence of TB in Tibetan refugee settlements in India and Indigenous communities in Canada. 

Completing the list of guests for the seminar are Rumia Owaisi and Laibah Hassan who will bring their perspective on  Exploring Video-Observed Therapy as a Patient-Centered Approach to Tuberculosis Care. Rumia is Team Lead for the Health Education Team, which is a part of the Student Counselling, Health & Wellbeing Department at York University. She is currently in her 4th year of studying global health with a specialization in health promotion and disease prevention. Her research interests include qualitative research methods, holistic health, and health promotion at the community and institutional levels. Laibah is a residence life Don, a senior staff member within residence life promoting community support at York University. She is currently in her 4th year of global health and is a premed student. She is also an active team member of the MedMag Society at York. Her research interests include medicalization of third world countries, public policy and programming within communities and qualitative research methods for disease prevention and health promotion. 

The presentations will be followed with a discussion session in which attendees will able to ask questions or discuss with the panel of presenters. The event will be moderated by Director of the Dahdaleh Institute for Global Health Research, Dr. James Orbinski. Please RSVP below.
