Part-Time Teaching Opportunity

The Disaster & Emergency Management Graduate Program at York University has a part-time teaching opportunity available for the 2026-2027 academic year, for the Winter semester (January-April 2027). Course: DEMS 5081 | Topics in Applied Disaster Management

Course time: Winter 2027, Wednesdays from 2:30-5:30pm

Delivery: Course is to be offered fully in-person

Course Description: This course explores selected topics in applied disaster and emergency management, as they relate to the theoretical aspects of the field. This year's offering focuses on practical DEM tools that will help students develop the confidence needed to contribute effectively in complex emergency management environments.

While other courses in the program provide robust academic foundation in DEM theory, disciplinary perspectives, root causes of disasters, and critical analysis of emergency management systems and frameworks, this course is aimed at developing the practical skills and competencies required to apply this knowledge in professional settings. Topics may include:

• emergency and crisis communication
• after-action reviews and improvement planning
• design, delivery, and evaluation of emergency exercises
• project management
• effective leadership and negotiation
• interorganizational coordination
• stakeholder engagement
• decision-making under pressure
• briefing and report writing, and
• translating lessons identified into organizational change.

The course is designed for both experienced practitioners seeking to strengthen and expand their professional capabilities and students preparing to enter the disaster and emergency management field.

To apply, please submit your complete CV, include a concept for the course, and list at least three professional and/or teaching references. The course concept should outline how the applicant would approach teaching the course, including possible weekly topics, assignment ideas, associated readings, case studies, and/or applied exercises they would use with graduate students. Given that this is a graduate-level course, the course concept should also demonstrate how students will engage meaningfully with academic literature, research, and/or evidence-informed debates in the field. *Please note that the course concept does not need to be a full syllabus, but should give the program a clear sense of the applicant's teaching approach and proposed course design.
