Faculty Fellow
Duygu is an Associate Professor of Human Resource Management at York University and an organizational scholar specializing in work disability, leadership, and healthy and sustainable work. Her research examines how employees with chronic conditions and disabilities experience work, and how leadership, HR practices, and organizational systems can better support their inclusion, well-being, and long-term employment.
A central focus of Duygu's work is understanding how organizations can move beyond reactive accommodation toward proactively designing healthier and more accessible work systems. She studies how leadership behaviors—both constructive (e.g., transformational leadership) and harmful (e.g., abusive or inconsistent leadership)—shape employee health, functioning, and performance. Duygu also examines broader workplace factors, including occupational health and safety practices, work design (e.g., breaks), and organizational mistreatment, to understand how everyday work environments enable or constrain sustainable employment.
Her research has been published in leading journals such as the Journal of Occupational Health Psychology, Safety Science, and Journal of Occupational and Organizational Psychology, as well as the Academy of Management Annals. Duygu's work is supported by funding from SSHRC, WorkSafeBC, and York University, and has been featured in outlets including Harvard Business Review, The Economist, and The Globe and Mail. She is also a member of the Centre for Research on Work Disability Policy (CRWDP), contributing to national conversations on the future of work disability in Canada.
More recently, Duygu's research has begun to explore how AI and data-driven systems can be leveraged ethically to improve employment outcomes for people with disabilities. This work focuses on issues of accessibility, fairness across disability groups, and the intersection of organizational decision-making with evolving legislative frameworks.
