Job description
Under the supervision of Professor Poonam Puri, the Shareholder Democracy Project student (for up to 11 hours per week) will:
- Support the research project entitled “Empowering the Shareholder Voice: A 20-Year Analysis of Shareholder Proposals and Governance Trends in Canada."
- Assist in collecting and organizing a 20-year dataset of proxy circulars from companies listed in the S&P/TSX 60 Index.
- Conduct preliminary analysis of proxy circulars, focusing on shareholder proposals, and disclosures related to board oversight of emerging topics such as AI and cybersecurity.
- Perform literature reviews and create annotated bibliographies on topics related to shareholder democracy and corporate governance.
- Contribute to the preparation of academic outputs, including journal articles, policy papers and presentations.
- Actively engage in team meetings and research discussions.
Specific research activities the student(s) will be engaged in:
- Collecting and compiling proxy circular data using databases such as SEDAR+ and Diligent.
- Conducting comprehensive literature reviews on shareholder democracy and corporate governance topics using legal research databases including Westlaw, Lexis Advance Quicklaw and CanLII.
- Assisting in organizing and categorizing data for analysis using tools like Excel and SPSS.
- Supporting the preparation of statistical tables, graphs, and charts to visualize research findings.
- Assisting with drafting and editing sections of academic and policy outputs, ensuring accuracy and clarity.
- Providing support for team discussions, workshops, and other research dissemination activities.
Qualifications
- Current undergraduate York University student. Applicants from diverse programs of study are encouraged to apply.
- Demonstrated interest in law, corporate governance, finance, or related fields.
- Excellent research skills, including experience in conducting literature reviews and data collection.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Proficiency in using Excel and Word; familiarity with SPSS or other data analysis tools is an asset.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a research team.
- Commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive research environment.
