{"id":1651,"date":"2019-10-29T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-10-29T04:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/dighr\/?p=1651"},"modified":"2025-08-06T14:05:25","modified_gmt":"2025-08-06T18:05:25","slug":"james-stinson-participates-in-maya-led-abink","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/dighr\/james-stinson-participates-in-maya-led-abink\/","title":{"rendered":"James Stinson Participates in Maya-Led Ab\u2019ink"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Postdoc Fellow <a href=\"https:\/\/dighr.yorku.ca\/people\/james-stinson\/\">James Stinson<\/a> was in Toledo, Belize, last week to participate in <i>Ab\u2019ink (Listening Space) of Maya Traditional Knowledge Holders and Academics<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Organized by Maya leaders, the event follows their recent victory at the Caribbean Court of Justice, which now requires the Belize government to recognize and protect Maya land rights. The gathering was an opportunity to envision and plan for a future of land security and integrity, and a community-oriented economy owned and controlled by Maya people.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Stinson was invited to speak at a session titled <i>Natural Resources Stewardship In Maya Communities<\/i> with local conservationists Rafael Manzanero and Esther Sanchez-Sho and academic scholars Becky Zarger and Sean Downey.
