draw a bicycle

Notes and documentation of the creation of a piece with FA/DANC 3235 3.0 2006 Repertory/Reconstruction I, FA/DANC 3236 3.0 2006 Repertory II, Holly Small, and Don Sinclair

History and Context

I was invited by Holly Small to work on projections and interactive video for Draw a Bicycle. The piece has four sections:

Bicycle projections were created by scanning dancers' drawings and using Max/MSP/Jitter to present and orchestrate the images. In part 1, images were presented at random sizes and locations syncronized to the music (bass and snare drum). In part 2, 4 dancers used bicycle lights off-stage in front of a web cam, whose input was manipulated using SoftVNS, to paint using the lights and their bodies. In part 4, images were orchestrated, again using random techniques this time to vary speed, path, size, and image choice, to move across the screen. Part 2 was done live in real time. I created the animated text with LiveType.

The Performance

Draw a Bicycle was performed in the Dancing Worlds program on March 23-25, 2006 in The Sandra Fair and Ivan Fecan Theatre, York University as part of the Fine Arts Festival celebrating the Accolade Project Opening.
