SUMMARY:Creative Risks: Navigating Ethics in Arts-Based Research with Children and Young People
DESCRIPTION:Co-organized by CYPIRN (Children and Young People Interdisciplinary Research Network), the Graduate Program in Language, Culture and Teaching, and the Associate Dean of Research, Faculty of Education\nJoin us for a lively conversation about the ethical considerations—practical, philosophical, and creative—that emerging and established scholars bring to their arts-based research with children and young people. Featuring the perspectives of artists and university researchers, alongside two graduate students—one just beginning their research, and the other nearing the end of their dissertation project—discussants will share their thinking about ethical frameworks when planning a research project with children and young people. How do our aims as researchers sometimes conflict with the assumptions and practices of university research ethics boards? What do young people themselves want from these research relationships? How can we rewrite our informed consent forms to better reflect the shifting dynamics of our work with young people and children? What lessons can we learn from our co-researchers?\nSpeakers include:\nStephanie Springgay, Director of the School of the Arts (SOTA), McMaster University\nReed H. Reed and Hannah Jickling, (Big Rock Candy Mountain), artists and instructors at the Yukon School of Visual Arts\nShannon Hyatali, PhD candidate, Language, Culture and Teaching, York University\nZoey Roy, PhD candidate, Language, Culture and Teaching, York University\nThis is a free event and all are welcome to attend.\n\n \n \n
