Seconded Faculty Positions

The Faculty of Education at York University invites applications from practicing professional educators for seconded positions in our Bachelor of Education program for 2022-2023. The term of secondment is normally for a period of one year, renewable, for a total length that is not to exceed three years.

Position Description:

A seconded faculty member in the Faculty of Education at York University is expected to be an experienced teacher who has kept abreast of new directions in curriculum, pedagogical strategies and staff development as well as understands the Ontario context in which elementary and/or secondary schools operate. Seconded faculty members are also expected to have demonstrated leadership in school settings and knowledge of equity issues, the use of educational research, supporting English language learners, inclusive education, and technology as a teaching tool. They must be committed to fostering motivation, professionalism and critical thinking in their students, who are the next generation of teachers.

Seconded faculty members may teach on Keele campus and/or at our other locations.

The following activities may be a part of a seconded faculty member's responsibilities:

  • Teaching courses (both on Keele campus and at other York locations) that prepare students in the theory and practice of education;
  • Coordinating and organizing courses/programs;
  • Working collaboratively, problem solving, and team-building with other seconded, tenure stream, and contract faculty members;
  • Supporting student teachers in their practicum settings and monitoring their learning and development in these sites;
  • Continuing to build on and strengthening existing professional partnerships with boards, schools and community partners;
  • Participating in the daily operation of the Faculty of Education (e.g., standing committees, working groups, admission process, special projects);
  • Collaborating with the Faculty in designing, evaluating, and improving our teacher education programs; and
  • Participating in ongoing professional development on issues relating to teacher education.

Eligibility:

Positions are open to qualified teachers at the following district school boards: Toronto, Toronto Catholic, Peel, Dufferin-Peel Catholic, York Region, or York Region Catholic.

Applicants should inform their Director of Education or Human Resources Department of their intention to apply for a seconded position. They should also confirm internal deadlines (e.g., requests) with their District Board. Secondees remain as employees of their school boards during secondment.

Positions for 2022-23:

Note: For at least one position listed below, preference will be given to candidates with a strong background in Indigenous education including Indigenous traditions and ways of knowing.

The Faculty of Education is looking to second teachers to fill the following positions:

Position 1: BEd Program (Glendon Campus) – French Immersion and Core French

This position is for instruction in the Primary/Junior/Intermediate/Senior levels and requires a strong background in French Immersion, Extended and/or Core French. Candidates must have a strong generalist background in curriculum and instruction with recent classroom teaching experience and critical knowledge of current Ontario curriculum and policy. Candidates must be fluent and able to teach in both English and French.

Position 2: BEd Program – Fine Arts 

This position is for instruction in the Junior/Intermediate/Senior levels and requires a strong background in Fine Arts education, including integrated Arts. Candidates must have expertise in curriculum and instruction across subject areas in the Arts with recent classroom teaching experience, and a critical knowledge of the Ontario curriculum, policy and teaching strategies. A demonstrated understanding of the ways in which equity, diversity, and social justice issues manifest in the teaching and learning of Fine Arts is preferred. Preference will be given to candidates with expertise in drama and visual arts.

Position 3: BEd Program – Physical Education and Primary/Junior/Intermediate Generalist 

This position is for instruction in Primary/Junior/Intermediate levels and requires a strong background in Health and Physical Education and detailed knowledge of OPHEA guidelines and health/safety in sport and teaching settings. Candidates must have expertise in curriculum and instruction across subject areas at the elementary and/or secondary levels with a comfort in teaching both, as well as recent classroom teaching experience and a critical knowledge of the Ontario curriculum, policy and teaching strategies. A demonstrated understanding of the ways in which equity, diversity, and social justice issues manifest in the teaching and learning of Health and Physical Education is preferred.

Position 4: BEd Program – Science 

This position is for instruction in Primary/Junior/Intermediate/Senior levels and requires a strong generalist background across subjects in elementary and secondary education, with a focus on Science Education, including in the areas of Chemistry and/or Physics. Candidates must have expertise in curriculum and instruction across subject areas with recent classroom teaching experience and a critical knowledge of the Ontario curriculum, policy and teaching strategies. Preference will be given to applicants who also have knowledge and experience of Science education at the Primary/Junior levels. A demonstrated understanding of the ways in which equity, diversity, and social justice issues manifest in the teaching and learning of science and other core subjects is preferred.

A selection committee within the Faculty will review applications, establish a shortlist of candidates to invite for interviews and/or colloquia, and recommend candidates for appointment.

Only those candidates shortlisted for an interview/presentation will be contacted (by late February 2022).
